I get very close to maxing out every month @ 120 hrs for part 135.

With DEN-CDR opening up next month, will DEN be a pilot base?

No they base you in the out stations. So you’ll be in chadron. From what I’ve heard is they’ve got that base full now.

Hi all, I applied online to SAE in the beginning of June. When I applied their preferred minimums where 500 hours. I live locally so I visited their main office gave my resume/cover letter and emailed their hiring manager as well.

Today I saw they lowered their preferred minimums to 250hrs. So I resent an email with my updated resume, some more information about myself, and some references.

What else can I do to stand out? How long do airlines typically take to respond when it comes to applications?

I have a little over 300 hours and all the cfi ratings.

Bah how do I delete this. Meant to PM. I can’t navigate this site in mobile 😓

Where are the the Southern crew bases?

Thanks!

Last I saw was:

KMEM - Memphis TN
KPIT - Pittsburgh PA
KBWI - Baltimore MD
KUGN - Lake County IL

But every time I’ve seen their route map it was completely different.

It may have changed but when I worked there 2 years ago, all the basing was done at the out stations. I was based at KDUJ. If it’s the same as it was, bases would include KBFD, KDUJ, KMGW, KLNS in the Mid-Atlantic and El Dorado, Hot Springs, and Harrison in the south. Not sure how they base the stuff out of Nantucket. Also have no idea if they base in LA or Denver for those services but I would have to guess the outstations (Imperial and Chadron) there as well.

Has anyone had a response here any time recently? With them dropping their advertised mins I thought they must be ready to start hiring, but I have not had a response since 2020.

AirVino 08-16-2021 06:42 PM

The careers page now has a listing for a Captain position in Pompano Beach, FL. Looks like they want 1200TT

Yup... an old guy from American. Shout out to Jim!

I saw a pix of Jim on the Cape Air site under the Gray Gulls pilot program, so I thought maybe he quit SAE. You sure he's still with SAE?

Pro Tip: drop the decimal and tenths.

The interview is easy. Expect to answer a few questions about your qualifications. Typical schedule is 4 days on and 4 days off. Yes, you can jump seat wherever you want.

Has anyone heard back from this last time the app for FO was open? Believed it closed on sept 3.

SAE Flying?

Hello everyone, I was wondering how the flying is like at SAE as I am only a short time away from obtaining my CPL and I already have over 250 hours of flight time to my name plus over 75 hours of instrument time? Also, what is the interview process like, and do you have the ability to bid on a base or is it automatically assigned to you during training?

Perfessor 10-23-2021 09:30 AM

Are mid-Atlantic SAE Captains pressing the 120 hour/calendar month limits?

Yes, but.....

..... if hired as a street Captain, expect a month or two delay in training. The company is short on instructors and check airmen. Lots of FO's are upgrading to replace Captains off to the regionals.

If hired as an FO, expect a four to five month delay in training for the reasons above, except you're even lower on the totem pole. Also, expect to fly a lot less than the captains. If you're expecting to rack up the hours to head to Skywest, you'd be better off being a CFI, you'll get there sooner.

What are the chances of being able to work another gig and trying to fly for Southern Airways Express? Just trying to make it work while building time.

You'll probably have to work another gig given their princely salary of $11/hour.

Definitely. I’m located in one of their bases, probably one of the least desirable too. I’m in no rush to get to any regional, but don’t want to put myself in an impossible situation and waste their/my time. Guess I should just apply and see lol

Current word is that FO training is backed up through January so presently they're only hiring captains. You're probably better off going the CFI route.

retrowings 11-07-2021 03:56 PM

That explains why they got rid of that recent FO posting a day later. CFI would probably be the most flexible for sure, but flying here just seems cooler. That and I need to become a CFI first...

As someone who initially wanted to avoid CFI and now is one, go CFI. More hours available and you'll probably build them faster. I've also learned a ton. If you still have a desire for some part 135 experience later you could get on as an SIC with 800-1000TT and upgrade much quicker or just be a PIC at 1200 hours.

Really good advice, although I would recommend going all the way to ATP mins as a CFI. The regionals don't care if you have part 135 or turbine time and taking that detour will cost you time and, more importantly, a lot of money!

retrowings 11-08-2021 06:18 PM

Thank you both for the advice.

I can see being a CFI as the most flexible option when trying to hold another job to pay the bills. The hard part would be to find a school that is willing to work with you.

I'll still keep an eye on this place though.

Even better advice! It’s always about the money and never about gaining some real experience at a 135 op away from the daytime VFR traffic pattern before jumping to a regional... or even skipping regionals all together.

FlightLife2020 12-07-2021 09:16 AM

Is 664hrs total time competitive for an FO position? I applied to the most recent application opening.

Absolutely! The question is why would you take a path that will get you to a Regional 9 months to a year later? Get your CFI and you could be at ATP mins in 9 months or so!

Maybe because if he doesn’t already have his CFI that could add 3-6 months just to get it? I don’t know, just saying.

3-6 months? You can get it done in a 2 weeks.
