While I do not work for TX DPS I have worked in a LEO Aviation Unit. I am familiar with TX DPS and LEO Aviation. What I can say is that you are a Trooper/Police Officer first. You will work as a Trooper for several years and apply to the aviation unit from within the department. I can tell you from personal experience, you can do both but at least for the foreseeable future, you will have to be ok with putting aviation on the backburner. Also, accept the fact that the aviation unit may not work out at all. If you want a career as an LEO, great. It can be very rewarding. Just understand you are not applying to the aviation unit from the street.
Texas DPS has a thorough and competitive hiring process that can take several months or a year (as is the same for most major departments). Once hired, there is a live-in 6 month police academy. From there, you will go to your assigned duty station. They work 5, 10hr days and you should expect those hours to be evening/night hours.
I can answer more detailed questions in a DM if you have any.
