I can think of a number more who would have loved to know where all of these mythical "1980's students" were, because they certainly weren't at the airports they were CFI'ing at. It seems to me that the last decade or so has had an abundance of zero-to-hero and ab-initio programs compared to what there were in the 1980's (again, just my impression, but I was there then).
There are definitely more "zero-to-hero" programs around these days... but from what I've see they are almost as slow as the mom n' pop flight schools. Like I said before, these are hard times for low-time pilots. I've been considering getting a part-time job elsewhere just to help pay the bills. Part91 KA time is great and all. But when your only getting about 15 hours a month and that all you have going... gotta find something else. I'm still waiting to hear back from a couple places but I've exhausted just about everywhere within an hour-and-a half's drive. Gotta finish that CFI/CFII/MEI :/

Again, I guess I'm just taking for granted that back in the 80's, MANY CFI's were working two jobs (or starving) because there weren't enough students. My surprise is that anyone is surprised that it's had to make it on CFI'ing alone - welcome to aviation (and at least partially SkyHigh has opted out).

I think its because up until about a year ago... most places were really busy. It just seems to have died off in the past year. Most of my instructors were getting around 100 hours per month because of a local college contract and foreign students. Now that both of those have dried up, no students.

Was is so much easier then? Hard to say - my knee jerk reaction is that we've recently seen a period where it was incredibly easy to get into, and survive, this career. I seem to remember a lot of my peers giving up on flying because there were no good jobs available.

Just saying - don't put on the rose colored glasses

I have been out of the loop for a while. Thanks guys for the correction.

I got my CFI in July of 1980. In a bit over two years I logged ~475 dual given. Around 18 hours a month. For the first year I was still working for UTA as a TA. When I got to 135 VFR mins the FBO would use me on some single engine Fotomat runs and UPS feeder flights if the weather was good. Made it to the right seat of the DC-3s they used for UPS and Tigers and never looked back.

I instructed for 1 year and logged roughly 900 hrs. That's somewhere around 75 hours a month on average. You just have to find the right job.

Dynamic Aviation of Bridgewater, VA
Not just high-pay overseas DOD stuff....

MANY low time pilots hired over the years for many & sundry contracts all over.
A&P or even mechanical aptitude/interest helps....ALL TURBINE

Also: tow gliders AND get a glider rating. Sometimes a tow-day per month covers your dues. Many clubs don't charge per hour for the glider.....the longer you stay up the cheaper the flight becomes .......and ALL glider time counts for the ATP 1500 TT requirement.
