Exclamation Ocular Migraines

Has anyone had experienced an Ocular Migraine?
Does anyone know what the rules are regarding Ocular Migraines? Frequency limits, Medication allowed?
I have heard of Aimovig that is supposed to prevent all migraine headache types.
Trying to decide if I should continue to pursue a career in aviation with this issue that seems uncontrollable.

Any information I would appreciate.

Thank you.

IIRC it would have to be very controlled, to a very low recurrence rate. Not sure about meds.

But make sure you understand all of the potential trigger factors, including erroneous refractive correction (ie your glasses prescription is out of date). The goal for certification is to minimize recurrences.

Thank you. I kind of figured that. I was curious about the current guide lines. If there is a source I can reference. Not finding anything on the net about it pertaining allowing pilots to fly with the condition. There are no triggers that I can identify.

Thank you for your time though.

See if these guys have any info posted. You could also pay them for consulting.

You can also just go talk to an AME, but it's probably better to understand what you're dealing with before you provide the FAA with any info (don't lie to them, but understand the lay off the land before you go there).

Ocular migraines are not what we think of as "migraine headaches". It's a visual field phenomena (migraine headaches can also produce visual disturbances but it's not the same thing). Mostly a minor nuisance for most people. But an obvious problem for pilots.

I have a couple of pilots now that are out on long term disability for Ocular Migraines. The FAA is requiring a full eye eval, Neurological eval just to start. Aimovig is not approved, as far as other migraines or headaches are concerned everything is a special issue unless your headaches are very infrequent (less than once per month, very limited approved medication can be issued by AME). This does not include ocular migraines... These have to be individually approved by the FAA.
Hope this helps!
