Default Medical Flight Test, anyone?

Hey all.

Upon recieving my 2nd class medical I discovered a slight color vision problem. It's nothing serious, I passed the light-gun test with flying colors. However, due to a new FAA regulation that was passed around April 14th, all light gun tests must be done along with a MFT (medical flight test). I've been trying to schedule one for the past month but scheduling and weather problems (amazing hurrican season, eh?) keep delaying it. Anways, even though this prodecure isnt even a year old, have any of you guys been through this? What should I expect? Is it really as simple as identifiying types of terrain and picking out a safe landing spot? The way it sounds i should pass it without problem and recieve my waver. Thanks.

This is all news to me. If you already have a waiver do you need to do anything else?

I dont have a waver. This is the process I have to go through in order to get the waiver. I passed the SLT which, in April of this year, was all one needed for the color vision waver. Suddenly, they changed it to an SLT AND an MFT. It's a real pain because I've been waiting forever to get this medical test done. I want to resume my flight training so bad.

You are aware that if you dont pass you will be branded for life as color blind by the FAA and will not be able to fly at night ever again? I would think 2 or 97 times about taking the medical flight test even if I had a gun to my head...of course you are not very invested in flying yet and the letter of evidence would be AWESOME TO HAVE. I suggest you read what exactly you have to do...its very discriminatory (word?) and extensive. You are going to be your aviation life the hands of the FAA. The FAA is where pilots go to die. Let us all know how it goes. Good luck.

RmTrice -

Congrats. I'm trying to get a hold of the Duplicate Medical Branch of the FAA right now. They are tough buggers to get a hold of!

Not trying to be a wiseguy, but I've had good success with just picking up the phone and calling. The secretarial types are typical Oklahoma folks - friendly and helpful. I had a paperwork problem a couple of years back and cleared it up in about ten minutes. Here's a good starting point ...

Aerospace Medical Certification Subsystem

No guarantees working with the FAA, but it's worth a try.

Not taking it as a wise guy comment so no worries there. I only get a couple of chances to call a day and have been trying for about a week. I got the number from the local FSDO and then narrowed that down to the actual desk I needed and it has been that person who I have yet to get ahold of during the times that I have called.

Typical Oklahoma folks huh? I'll take that as a compliment since I am nearly the original Okie from Muskogee (just a little further towards central OK)!

Wonder if that person is on vacation or sick. Hmmmm - hope the number is correct.

Only other thing would be to fax what you want and maybe someone will get it to the right person. Kinda thin strategy, though. There are fax numbers on that link above. Frustrating ...

The two states that suffer the most jokes are WV and OK; I've visited both a lot and have ALWAYS had a good time!
