Health Insurance? Or Life insurance?
I would say yes to some kind of health insurance...at least catastrophic insurance.
Life insurance, probably not unless someone depends on you for financial support or other support which could be replaced with money..ie if you care for an aging relative, life insurance would pay for a caregiver in your absence.

It's neither really... I had a hard time understanding the concept. It's just like personal insurance, not full health insurance.
So like for example I signed up for the "Accident and Hospital" plan... so if I have an accident, whether its chipping a tooth or breaking a leg, they'll pay me X amount of money per day/per accident/whatever. They don't pick up the medical tab.
Basically its like supplemental heath insurance that pays cash to help w/ the costly burdens of an accident/illness.
I hope I explained that right.
Technically I'm still under my parents health insurance, but I'm wanting to start becoming more independent from them, and I figure maybe this is a good start?

AFLAC is essentially money for YOU that comes to YOU in the case of a different range of problems. They offer many different plans. I have a short term disability plan thru them that would pay me 1100 per month for 6 months... cost is about 4 bucks per paycheck.

In general, accident insurance in not such a good deal.
Primarily, it is because you may become sick/injured from a reason other than an accident, and you will not be covered.
If you are covered by your parent's health plan, you may not need anything else.
When you have to provide your own insurance, a major medical plan is a cheap way to have coverage for a catastrophic illness/injury. Typically it covers all costs up to $1 million, with a large deductible (e.g. $2500).
So you would pay the first $2500, and the insurance company would pay 100% above that, up to the policy limits.
I had a policy like this, from Blue Cross/Blue Shield or Anthem, and it was less than $20/month. The price varies due to age, health, deductible, and limits.

Ok I guess we can kinda turn the question another way... as a single 21 year old, whats the best route to take as far as insurance/health insurance is concerned?

You could supplement a major medical policy, but most likely, if you are young, single, and have no dependents, then you do not need a policy like AFLAC. If you can afford the deductible (or your family would help you), then you probably don't need it also. You can talk to an insurance specialist, but keep in mind they are salespeople, paid on commission.

If you do anything remotely dangerous outside of your job and the chances of you getting injured and not being able to work are high, I would get the AFLAC coverage. At a previous job I had AFLAC for about 5 bucks a paycheck, got hurt off the job, between the AFLAC and short term disability, I was still making the same amount of money per month as I did when I was working.
AFLAC is great if you engage in high risk behaviors outside of work. If you don't, then no need to buy it.

I would also suggest getting it. I had to take 4 months off of work this year due to a motorcycle racing injury. 4 months without pay and I wished I had signed up earlier.
Like Swat said, if you are involved in risky activities it is well worth it.
