Make sure you get your first pair in person vice over the internet. They come in Euro sizes, and need to fit perfect. Don't want a 43 if you're a 42 as your foot will slide just a little in them (or they'll be tight of if it's the other way).

I'm assuming no socks with vibrams? Don't they get a little stinky?

I'm intrigued by the idea but for two reasons:

1) I'm a big guy. I notice when I work on my feet all day painting or whatever, my feet hurt if I'm not wearing a good pair of tennis shoes. Not sure if I can equate that to running but I do know a lot of people that have to stand on a rubber mat in order to reduce the chance of injury. Not sure if we are talking apples and oranges?

2) What about cold climates. Seems like vibrams would offer no insulation from running in the winter, which defeats the purpose for 1/3 of the year up north (unless you have access to a treadmill)

Any thoughts?

Grumble said that it took some initial growing pains. I would imagine that this means that you (others) have been conditioned by wearing shoes.

Like Cody always says - it is all about acclimmation. Even the cavemen started wrapping their feet in Mammoth skins for some reason

I would think that these leg warmer things would keep you feet/legs warm. Just make sure they match your shoes.

I'm 6'3" and 230, I'm running 15-20 miles a week barefoot.

As far as them getting smelly with no sock (no you don't wear socks, they're like condoms for your feet)... you just toss them in the wash.

What about transitioning between sports? Specifically basketball for me. If your muscles are "re-trained" is it advisable to switch back and forth between these things and regular athletic shoes when participating in different forms of exercise?

As long as you're using both types regularly, you'll have no problem. This isn't "re-training"; it's stimulating / strengthening muscles in a different way.

If you're an avid b-baller, I'd imagine this would be great for you, as it's going to rebuild and retrain foot and calf muscles you never knew you had.

I agree fully - for practice. I wouldn't play in a pickup game unless everybody else was "unshod". Just one guy with shoes would make the game seem like the chariot race in Ben Hur.
