Well I went to the doc today. Good news it's Type II. Bad news my numbers we're really bad form the blood test done 10 days ago.

I've been on insulin the past 10 days. Going to be on it for another 30. He's starting me on two other drugs. Metformin is one, Bi... something or another is the other. I'll be on that one for a month. I'll start something else 30 days from now to go along with the Metformin. Then the 60 days will start.

Hopefully my employer won't mind me converting to a medical leave of absence after the 12 weeks of FMLA runs out.

To LRShooter,

Your Doctor, has put you in the scenario of no First or Second Class Medical with the Insulin.

I do know people who have done what you are doing, and at a later point in time, they quit the Insulin, and do get their medicals (first or second class) back.

Metformin is probably the most accepted drug by the FAA, for a Diabetes Special Issuance, for any class medical.
That's the good news.

You need to determine if the "Bi....." drug is on the approved FAA list, or you may be digging a hole, by wasting this time frame, when you could be taking a FAA Approved Drug.

Reality is, the super stuff that the FAA doesn't accept, probably works best for your health, but the Feds. dislike them because usually their time on the market has been brief.

I think you at one time said your treating physician is also your AME.
If that's the case, YOU should help determine which drug the FAA will accept by checking the www.faa.gov and the AOPA medical list, as a backup to his/her knowledge.
Your not trying to insult the person, just back him/her up.

If that all agrees, you are probably headed down the right path.
If it doesn't, you may wake up 3-6 months from now, and find out you have to start all over on all different medications.

My AME thought certain drugs would be appropriate for me, that weren't on the FAA list.

Not to be the bearer of bad news, but the 60 day clock, is not always hard and fast, and it does depend on your A1c being lower than 8.0, usually on more than one occasion, regardless of what you find written in other FAA documents.
It (60-180 day clock) should start after you remove the insulin from your routine, but with the FAA, there are no guarantees!!!

If you end up staying on Insulin, as you probably already know, your professional career as a pilot is done for, unless the FAA changes the guidelines, like Canada, England, etc..
The real point here is to get healthy with your Doctors guidance, then get your papers in order to recertify the FAA Medical.
That can be another really huge hurdle too, but worry more about that after you get better!!!

My last post was deleted. I guess because it is labeled as an advertisement. But, the product I am taking is all-natural and was made for type II diabetics originally. It balances your blood sugar, so I think it would be perfect for anyone dealing with this issue. I won't leave an ad on here, but if you are interested at all, you can PM me for details. I'm not into pressure sales, and won't bug you with emails, etc. It is an all-natural health supplement, so you won't have any issues with the FAA or random drug testing. My in-laws just had a checkup the other day and have been on the products for a couple of months. They had the best numbers they have had in a LONG time. These numbers were for blood pressure, cholesterol, and blood sugar. These are people that always eat right, and take care of their bodies, and still had great results at the doctor. Also, there is a 60-day money back guarantee for a full refund. So, you really have nothing to lose. Best of luck to you! I hope it all works out!
