The only reason that happened was because 16 people left ORF. They’re not adding pilots to ORF so the only openings are people leaving. Unlike DC or PHL where their allocating additional pilot spots.

People are leaving ORF because CLT got more Junior and a lot of people were chasing the R1 for the holidays and were commuting to ORF

Fair warning, ORF is a headache for reserve commuters), a noticeable amount of guys will commute to ORF for a line until they can hold a line in CLT. It effectively makes CLT look more junior and ORF look more senior to some extent. Also, the holidays skew numbers due to the base jumpers who changed based to avoid reserve or hold a more lucrative holiday line. We're seeing everything go "back to normal" seniority wise. The numbers you guys will see here for bases will be accurate over the next ~9 months.

New guys should know that reserve at PSA, much like the rest of the regional industry, can be incredibly draining if you commute. I wouldn't wish it on to my worst enemy. Best advice is to avoid commuting. Pick a base that works for you (but don't pick CVG... and probably TYS, cause some people heard it'sclosing for the past 12 years). I believe all PSA pilots will agree that being a lean mean round 1 SAPing machine vs. a hot reservist (as sexually appealing as that sounds) are like living two totally different lives, working for two totally different companies.
what you are seeing in ORF are ORF based FOs who live or committed to the base since the opening upgrade finally. There are were at 20-25 of us. This is also why ORF is starting to see movement on the FO side finally in the fall of last year. On the Captain there are have been a lot of CLT commuters even before the holiday pay season. A lot of those guys are finally going back which is allowing the ORF FOs upgrade into ORF.

I think the chances of all of them disappearing are slim, but not impossible. I wouldn’t be surprised to see at least one more close in the next year or so though.
DAY will never close.

Guess it’ll be TYS then. Since ORF was opened at mainline’s request.

Why wait until they retire?

Their big manpower problem now is retaining mid-level captains. Closing a base with a bunch of lifers would make life worse for mid-level captains

Piedmont, SkyWest, ExpressJet, Compass, Commutair and Air Wisconsin all have HQ without a crew base. I believe it wasn’t that long ago that SBY was a crew base for PDT, now just PHL and CLT.

DAY will remain open as long as AA wants it open.
