Would all depend on the company...however one common denominator would be a desire to be disliked by everyone that the street captain skipped by...

I'll gladly slip by all the guys who slipped by flight instruction and freight to become airline pilots, got hired with 500 hours and now can't hold captain because of their low time. I paid my dues before you, now I reap the rewards.

Yep, and if the airlines would have been hiring at 500 hours whenever you were hired, you would of kept flight instructing and flying freight, I'm sure....its all about timing, and unfortunately, the timing is in none of our hands.

I'm sure I would have. But I wouldn't begrudge someone who went through all of that and got the hours before me the chance to make captain.

Kinda sounds like a GoJet attitude there, labbats...very uncharacteristic of you...

labbats 03-17-2007 05:07 AM

If someone doesn't have the ability to upgrade and started flying in 2004 when I started in 2000, shouldn't I be allowed to proffer for that captain seat?

I don't think that's anywhere near a GoJet attitude. I'm not taking anything that someone can gain. If they had the hours to upgrade, then they would.

If a company has exhausted all upgrade qualified FO's, and they need street captains, what's the problem? Should they just scale back the operation until the FO's build time? Or drop upgrade mins? (Since most regionals are reasonable?) I don't think so....

I don't have any philosophical problem with street captains, as long as company seniority is exhausted first, ie no qualified FO's seat locked in another airplane. If all the available FO's don't meet CA mins, then the guy off the street who has put in his airplane time gets a shot.

Ultimately, seniority will prevail when the low time FO eventually upgrades on top of the street captain.

I guess at Trans States a few years ago there was a lot of resentment b/c there were street captains hired, which then a few months later kept some qualified FO's from upgrading b/c they didn't need any upgrades at the time. (correct me if I'm wrong TSA guys who were there at the time)
