Hey Imperial............case in point

And you must not be a CFI. A high performance signoff is NOT one hour ground/one hour flight...look it up. And if it is so easy to get, then why doesn't Riddle offer it? You should be getting something for that $100,000 you are spending.

Don't get me wrong. I totally agree with this thread- a college degree is a must, and preferably advanced degrees. But regardless, this job pays very poorly, especially when compared to other professionals in your 50s. More so when you realize you have no retirement and have to compare your paycheck with what your peers in other professions are earning.

My advice to the young fellow: Go to college, find a profession outside flying, and enjoy the money to do fun flying on the side!

Are you serious? You should be making 250K+ working no more than 8 days a month at Delta after 17 years.

What happened?

Would i have a better chance of making it if I got hired at a Regional when im 19, or go to college, and try and get hired around 22 or 23? I am plannin on doing the ATP thing Summer of 2008, when i'm 18, then either a)Applying at a Regional or
b)going to college while CFI'g somehow.
What do u guys think?
You have to ask yourself and answer it truthfully, am I a good student, do I have discipline? If it's anything other than yes, then it's going to be almost impossible to train/instruct while you're going to college. So many people try that route and many can't handle it. Most are faced with the situation of continuing college or flight training.

Once you choose training, you won't go back to college, it just doesn't work that way. That's why there are a lot of pilots that do the on-line way. I say it does work especially if you have some college experience, but that could be a trap also because you might get comfortable at your job and forget about college all together. I say you're young forget about being a pilot for the next few years and focus on your studies. You will need the degree sooner or later.

So the majority thinks that having a regional job, with a hectic schedule, while taking online classes is a no go?

Just a quick question....
maybe offtopic....
Are you allowed to CFI while being employed by a regional?
[eventhough it might be a question where you would
find the time]

No, I'm definitely not a CFI. I believe they do offer it, just not with their standard training. I'm not really sure, as I've never looked into it.

And if I only spent 100k at Riddle, I would be a happy camper right now.

I recall they used to do it during the commercial portion, in a 182, but they stopped doing that the year before I attended. I agree with ya, it should be included.

Riddle has a lot of flaws that could/should be changed.

I ushually agree with everyone, but in this case I will say you need a degree, no matter what. You MUST get a degree, HOWEVER, if you want to get into the real world first, it can be done. Past generations havent gone to college, and when you get into the real world, most of your bosses are just going to say, "ok, welcome to work, now you can forget EVERYTHING you leanred in college" And not to mention college blows. Classes are boring, NOT real life at all. Some people absolutly love college, and that's great, however if your just not the college type of person, does not matter you still have to get a degree, but you don't have to do it like everyone else...think outside the box for once. Who says you have to go to college full time when your flying for a regional??? Take a class or two per semester, by the time your ready to upgrade AND/OR go to a Major you will have your damn degree. My goodness.
