Personally I think CAL and most other Px majors just dont have the Retirement/pay/work rules/etc etc etc that the cargos have.... its worth my time to wait, get the experience now, and have a better, more stable career.... UPS has been around 100 years and in my opinion will be here in another 100 years..... can you say that about (insert Px carrier here)?
I wouldn't worry too much about the new requirement.... Having worked there and seen the numbers, retirements will continue at record breaking numbers due to age 60 (or 65 if it changes). Fleet is growing yearly and with international operations, each airplane is crewed at close to 10 crews/plane. Need I remind you of the order for 26 767s, the MD-11s currently coming, 747-400s, the cancelled A380 order that likely needs replacement, etc.... Hiring will continue....may just slow down for a while....never fear....UPS will be here.

I agree. This is kinda absurd. They are really shooting themselves in the foot because when people like that upgrade in 3-5 years on the 737 they will not have been PIC in anything except smaller piston aircraft.....now a 737.....The average Guy upgrading at XJT already has enough trouble.....

Well fellas, if you want to go to Brown, you are going to need "International/Oceanic crossing experience as either PIC or SIC" Apparently this is to weed out all of the regional guys.......................looks like you are going to have to go to North American, or Kalitta if you ever want to be looked at by them
, maybe SkyHigh is right after all, just keeps getting harder and harder

The Big expansion at Fedex and UPS is in the International Long haul market.
FedEx is getting MD-11's and 777's while UPS is getting 767's Md-11's and 747-400's. They are going to hire directly into the right seat of a Heavy.
Is it too far fetched to think they want to hire Pilots with International/heavy experience?, especailly when there are many Pilots with heavy Intl experience on the street or looking to leave their current job. I can't speak for UPS but at FedEx we are having trouble staffing ANC vacancies during each bid.........in other words the Seats in ANC are going pretty junior with respect to the PAY/Equipment.
I have flown with a few right seaters who came strictly from the Civilan background and prioir to coming to the MD-11, the biggest airplane they flew was a CR-j or EMB. I've flown with a few that have their hands full with the MD-11 espcially when things don't go as planned,
When you started this career, did you really expect to be flying a Heavy after 2-3 years in an RJ? Five years ago you wouldn't have been flying a Jet at the regional level, now it is common place.
Many of us spent 5 years as an FE before we could upgrade to the right seat of a Narrow body and then it was another 3-5 years before one could hold right seat of a wide body. The fact that anyone is hiring directly into Widebodies was unheard of a few short years ago. Keep your nose to the grind stone. If you have an opportunity to fly something bigger at a non sked then do it.
