I have confirmed that a fully powered down device will still give location information. I’m going to test a device with a completely dead battery to see if it still reports location.

Some devices have been shown to continue to track location with a dead battery.

That's possible because Li batteries will be severely damaged if their charge state actually reaches zero, so they have onboard battery management. When the system tells you the battery is done and shuts down, it actually is still reserving some charge for minimal housekeeping and battery life preservation. Unless you let it it sit for weeks or maybe months, there's still stuff happening on the motherboard.

As to why a device would be designed to retain geo loc as a priority in that condition, I don't know. Maybe it can be done with very little power usage, since it's passive, receive only and requires no transmission from the device.

Are you guys seriously worried about your company listening to you through your EFB microphone to verify sick calls?

I did test an iphone by keeping it on until it shut off. I used the find my iphone feature and it could not give me the location. So it may be different for how the companies are doing it or not.

A greater cause for worry is your implanted microchip. Management even knows what you had for breakfast. :p

This. Get to where you want to be...call out sick. Call in well...go back to work. Simple...they can't control where you can go on your off days. They can't control when you get sick or why. I had one instance in my 50+ days of sick occurrences over 7 years where a note was ever requested. I asked them to foot the bill, as I couldnt afford it (early days with low FO pay) They rescinded their request.

This. If you call in sick thinking you will miss the whole sequence, there isn’t some cosmic law that states you can’t be better in two days.

What is even more worrisome is its ability to detect brain signals to the rear end. Next contract they will want to deduct time spent doing nature’s calling. You cannot be flying then, so no need to pay you.

Someone in management is reading this, saying “You know ... that point DOES have merit!”

Jeebus Christmas I've never met a more paranoid bunch than pilots.

First of all no one has time to watch you like this. Secondly they would only watch you like this if you had a consistent pattern of calling sick/fatigued/abusing the system.

I've pretty much done everything everyone says not too do just because I'm that guy. I've not heard a peep about nothing.

These people that think the FAA & management is hiding behind every cloud should probably go see a psychiatrist or something.

I've even shared the cockpit with the knitting circle types with their tales of caution - recently it was "don't say nothing on social media, some guy said something on Facebook about XXX and I heard he got fired over it". My reply - "Really, you really think they fire people over that stuff"? Yes, was the reply. I remember when XXX happened and guess what, I just flew with that guy a month ago - we talked about this very thing, so obviously he did he not get fired...

Enough to make a pilot poop in his pants.

Now where’s that piddle pack when you need it?
