how far/long was the leg?

 

yeh, i was told to "fly" the airplane as much as possible while on IOE, helps you get a feel for the real plane. the sim is good, but there are motions and feelings it can't simulate, so, you'll get a better feel in the plane. It's also nice to have as much feeling of the plane before you land it too, as you'll need to get a good feel for how much you need to move the yoke to get the desired pitch for the flare. So, the autopilot on approaches all the way down the glideslope will become a thing of the past.

Oh yeh, don't forget to say "clear right" a lot, have fun giving the passenger briefings during cruise (just say what you mean, and don't say things like "nipples, she's hot, or, did you see the fat lady in 3c" and remember what my IOE checkairman said as i flew that first approach..."good luck, we're all counting on you."

 

Not far, maybe 25-30 min enroute.

The previous post about the AP being inop is true, it will happen one day.

 

1. Don't wear your tshirt that says "iflyjets4food" When I did this in 94 at COEX the IAH CP wanted me to take it off because through my sweat in August under a white shirt, the pax could read it while I did the walkarounds.
2. Never pass up the opportunity to take a leak when you have 30 seconds.
3. If a pax comes up and tries to tell you that the carburetor is making funny noises on the engine (turboprop only), Let the Capt speak. Don't do as I did on IOE and start to make a stupid comment that "Actually, it is a turb..." when the Capt cut me off and politely thanked the man for confirming his fears that it was either the carburetor or possibly the timing chain, but it would be looked at thanks to his attention to the matter. Same if they say the muffler is making odd noises "in the beginning of the flight" on jets.
4. Drink some water during the day so you can do 2. above
5. Have fun!

 

I've been hand flying (I'm on IOE also) up to about 18k or so. Company limt is min 600 ft to max 20k on departure.

 

The corollary to this is to always attempt to make your CA laugh while he's talking to the pax.

 

i find it helps also out of courtesy to the other pilot. Just the other day we did a dtw to lan turn, 22 min in the jet. Things are really busy in those 22 minutes and it helps the non fly (and the pilot flying) out a lot. For example we took off, i was flying, called for ap on at 600, he called departure, and then i took the radios so he could prepare for the approach into lan,, get atis, set up fms, call the station, etc. etc...

i guess what i am trying to say is that yeah,, i love to hand fly the plane to 28999, but some times it is prudent to get the ap on a little sooner to help facilitate all the other things going on.

 

22 min? Sounds about like GSP-CLT, PHL-ABE, BWI-PHL or any of the other super-short routes we do. On short legs you're a-holes and elbows up there but its not *that* time critical...

Depending on your experience, you're likely to have the CKA tell you stuff you already know. That's fine, smile and nod and remember he's working toward the lowest common denominator. Mine told me on arriving at the gate "Congratulations you just flew a jet!" but I said "Hey thanks but I flew a Beechjet before I got here."

 

The only 3 things you need to know....

1. "clear right"

2. "I'll take the tuna."

3. "I'll take the fat one."

 

I thought #2 was always, "You're right."
