Fun poll: Best and worst looking uniforms.

Regional unis.

Let's hear what you've got. Best and worst and why.

jpso 03-10-2019 03:25 PM

Why are you posting more stupid **** on these forums?

bnkangle 03-10-2019 03:58 PM

....a pilot uniform is a pilot uniform.
Although I think name tags and hats are overdoing it, esp for a regional.

Meow1215 03-10-2019 03:58 PM

White shirt and tie with black pants - aside from the occasional hat or leather coat they all look the same: not like Delta.

Paychecks aside, I don't see it as overkill. The public trusts you the same, and I don't see a problem with maintaining that public image. The worse you dress, the worse it gets. I've been noticing more backpacks, tennis shoes, and wacky haircuts in the terminals lately. And how hard is it to button your blazer? /rant

Worn with their uniform? Like black tennis shoes?

Back in the late 90's when I was based in Brussels, Air France had these pretty sweet double breasted black uniforms. Those are out of style now, but were really nice back then.

Any regional have navy blue unis?

Used to be, most airlines wore either navy blue or black. Now it seems like black only.

Republic is still navy blue. I wish it was black, I'd be able to find pants that actually fit right and match my blazer instead of crap M and H parachute pants.

You can't have your uniform pants tailored to fit better?

KCaviator 03-10-2019 06:02 PM

Worst: SkyWest
Best: Everyone else.

Not familiar with them. What's so bad about them?

And for the record, most suits can look good if tailored correctly. The nicest suit in the world will look like crap on you if it doesn't fit right.

Black tennis shoes, or dress shoes that aren't one color (think racing stripes). A black backpack hanging off the roll-aboard doesn't look terrible but I've seen a few colorful backpacks worn over the blazer this winter. Looks ridiculous.

Read above.

zondaracer 03-10-2019 06:44 PM

1. Yes, you can tailor your uniforms to fit better.
2. At the regionals, they pretty much wear three different uniforms:
- SkyWest, Endeavor, Expressjet and Compass essentially have the same uniforms, black with gold stripes. I think Horizon wears the same thing but with the Alaska tie. There are a couple variations such as what combinations of sweaters, leather jackets, jackets are allowed etc. Three out of four in this group have name tags, and 1 in 4 requires the hat all the time.
- Piedmont, Envoy, and PSA wear the American uniform which is a dark grey with silver stripes
-Blue with silver stripes which is what GoJet, TSA, Republic, Mesa, and I believe Commutair wear.
- Black with silver stripes which is what Air Wisconsin wears

3. In general, the uniforms come from one of 3 or 4 main vendors, and there isn't a lot of variation. For the most part, they look the same and nobody really cares. You wear what your boss tells you to wear. And nobody is wearing double breasted blazers except for Delta and most people feel that it makes you look like you are in the Navy.

Honestly if you took the epaulettes off a Skywest uniform you could be mistaken for a missionary. Not good.

You can't tailor pant leg diameter.

*Edit-apparently I'm wrong.

Best: Chicago Express. Most likely before your time.

Yes, every pair of pants that I've purchased from the uniform vendor I've had tailored to shrink the diameter of the pants. It's not cheap, but I think it's worth the cost. However, one time I bought a pair of pants from crew outfitters and they had put a silicon bead on the inside of the crease so that it holds the crease... and if your tailor doesn't remove an equal amount of material from both sides, then you have a problem. But I have only received one pair of pants that had that.

Good to know. I'm tall and slender so the pants they gave me look like they are for a 300 lb dude. I'm going to go broke on tailoring, but I figure if your going to be a professional you should look the part. Too bad the airlines don't feel the same way. Guy at Men's Warehouse told me Alaska used to have them fit pilots. Cost cutting....

Thanks!

Yes it can be done by a good tailor.

I had it done on a lightweight summer suit last year. Was a big improvement.

I was at Republic and hated the M&H pants and shirts. Very scratchy feeling and not sure why. At Commutair now and we're Navy Blue as well and use Crew Outfitters. While tailored reasonably well the official pants are needlessly expensive and generally of poor quality.

Frustrated, I went to Macys and found Ralph Lauren Navy Blue pants off the rack that are a dead ringer for the Republic and C5 pants at least in color. They're not exactly the same fabric texture, but that is not obvious unless comparing them at less than a foot away. The RL are a better quality wool pant for less money and available in all the usual off-the-rack sizes.

The only thing I miss right now from Republic is the 3 in 1 jacket. I was doing my walkaround in Quebec the other day in -20 and really missed it. That jacket is light years better than what C5 offers. I wish I knew who made them for Republic because I'd buy one direct. If anyone with the 3 in 1 can get me the manufacturer name or would be willing to coordinate a sale of a new size small I'd appreciate it.

A little off topic, but why in the world would you leave YX for C5?

N1CEandEZ 03-10-2019 07:46 PM

While I don’t like any hats period the Endeavour hat looks like they forgot to put a logo on it.

Yeah, not a fan of hats either. Until I go bald at least. Lol

Doesn't need to be a good tailor, just someone one step above the "dry cleaning and alterations" place should be able to do it.
It's a sideseam job so shouldn't be that expensive, you don't do any work on the construction.

This. The horn-rimmed glasses... the stupid hair flip... those teeth... definitely the worst.

rickair7777 03-11-2019 06:39 AM

My fav is SKW, hands down. The knee-high black boots seal the deal. Even better was legacy VX, more boots, leather, short skirts, etc.

Oh wait, were you guys talking about PILOT uniforms  Why?

Best pilot uniform hands down is heavy cargo... sweatsuits or pajamas.

How are you supposed to pick up women in the hotel lounge wearing a sweatsuit or pajamas? :D

You need the right pajamas. There's a UPS guy out there wears red silk pajamas, with tassles and a fez...

Midwest Express had some very striking epaulets.
