Love Aviation
Apologies about the slight thread derail....

Like a lot of people here, I still just don't get you, man. Wasn't it just a little bit ago that you posted that you'd re-lit the fire to get hired by Alaska?
It's obvious that you love aviation...otherwise you wouldn't keep posting here. This thread asks if anyone actually enjoys being an airline pilot...and I know from your posts that there is a part of you that indeed enjoyed the job when you were doing it and a part that wishes you could continue to do it today.
On the other hand, the content of your posts are well evident to everyone who visits this site -- you are the intentional antithesis of everyone who is enthusiastic about this career field.
So...what exactly is your point? Why do you stay engaged on this board?

That being said; I also can not afford to waste another day on reserve for a crummy company nor will I sacrifice the happiness of my family through accepting yet another dead end low paying flying job. All I can do now is to sit tight and hope that I can find a situation that meets my needs.
If Alaska Airlines calls I will get my suit out however if SWA calls I will let it go to voicemail.

I think it is great.
Hey, Skyhigh, what do you think about those guys/gals at SWA, UPS, FedEx, CAL, DAL who are/will be making very good money Flying airplanes, not to mention the other legacy airlines beginning hiring as well as contract negotiations coming around, do you think these pilot groups arent going to get pay raises???????????? And dont give me that BS line how getting a job with a legacy is like winning the lotto, I have flown with many CA's who are leaving for legacy carriers and they just applied like everyone else............

Just hope that your turn comes up before the next wave of layoffs and furloughs or else you could suffer the same fate. Enjoy the good times they seem to linger less than in the past.

A few people will get hired, new fairytale stories will be made and everyone will forget about the last 6 years of blood bath and of the generation of pilots who were swept under the carpet. A few companies will extend modest pay raises and no one will stop to consider that wages are still far below what pilots made 20 or even 10 years ago.

You said you build houses, never mentioned the rentals. Now that you mention it, I understand how you can survive in the slow times. At least you were smart enough to set-up different ways to make it in a tough industry.

I agree the pay it seems will never go back to where it was, its funny everybody here including myself praises SWA pay, but in reality they were sub-par YEARS AGO, people oooogle at it because everybody else just went so low, meanwhile NWA DC-9 Ca pay used to be like $190.00/hr, now people are happy flying CRJ-900 for $60/hr as a CA................ Only the airline Industry can go backwards in pay, the cost to run an airline goes way up, pax tickets go down as well as QOL and Pay of the pilots, I hope these pilots have the balls to stand up to management this time around...........

Adjusted for todays dollars and assuming an average of 4% inflation of the next 35 years the numbers are 1.15 mil with retirement income of 80k-100k per year. again that's today's dollars and only 500 per month. You should be able to do much more than that with matching funds and proper budgeting. your example of your parents house is an isolated case of inflation/appreciation in one of the most expensive real estate markets in the world.
PS
start at 23 and it's 7.5 mil (2.1 in today's dollars) so start early and pay yourself instead of GMAC.

$500/month for 35 years at 12% is $3.2 million as you say. Discounted back to present value assuming 4% inflation per year is $815,000. Assuming you live until 95, your retirement income will be nearly $400,000/year (the number is significantly less in terms of todays dollars, after being adjusted for inflation).

I couldn't agree more with what your saying. Putting money away while your young and living below your means is key. I think your numbers are a little off though:
