It's universal knowledge that the costs alone would extend someone to at least 5 or 6 years in getting their kollege (:D) degree? Plus, I've yet to fly a plane that requires a degree to turn the engines. So why a degree and why 4 years? Well think about it. Who can afford to finish their degree out of high school in exactly four years? Mostly people with the social/financial backing, i.e. Peachtree City mansion families and the like. Or those whose families offer the right kind of support. College degrees act as social filters. Keeps certain people in and others out. Do I agree? Eh, doesn't matter, but that's what life is right now.

That being said, who can recommend an affordable online degree program for someone who maxed out their financial aid and loans?

In addition to upper middle class you get kids with no means who joined the military. Uncle is pretty insistent that you finish in 3-4 years and that includes technical degrees.

ya, I'm pretty sure nobody in hiring thinks meeting the normal standard and preferred qualifications says you were "brainwashed by a bunch of extreme left ideas". Plenty of right leaning major airline pilots. On top of that, pilots are a pretty homogeneous group and that's a good thing. Safety depends on our like mindedness to look after each other. Would you prefer one who is adaptable to meet the standard or one who rebelled over political philosophy?

Do the Majors care about real world experience nope,

they literally ask 'Tell Me About A Time' questions man, real world experience matters a lot as a predictor of your future performance. Ideally, it would be germaine to the discussion. Your business acumen is commendable, but not really relatable to the discussion of airline pilot in all it's aspects. They're hiring a pilot, not a CEO.

He or she met the standard they're looking for and you didn't so....

Nobody here is arguing it makes you a better pilot. That’s a straw man. So is the notion that only the rich somehow get to afford it. You can take one class at a time through a junior college for a few hundred bucks.

Everyone sets up filtering mechanisms for social reasons. Creating a caste is the single most important part of humanity. Both college and Military show great success at the level of slavery. The really smart guys see little value in either one beyond that.

CFI bros with no degree and a ticket from ATP courtesy of mommy and daddy are the pinnacle of aviation. Very stable geniuses. You're all just jealous, haters.

17 pages of this ridiculous thread? Some of you guys need to fly more and get more experience. It shouldn’t take you that long to notice that having a degree has no effect on what kind of pilot or coworker you are. I want a good pilot with sound judgment and a good personality next to me.

The funniest part is all of you whining about the thread don't even realize it's satire.

That and most of you can't spell the word college lol

As the OP, I appreciate you spelling it out for everyone. ;)
I think it evolved/devolved into some interesting conversations though.

My $0.02 is that the college degree "preference" (i.e. requirement) is not important for what it is, but what it represents about the individual. Love it or hate it, it is a filter.

Is it important, sure. For a pilot? Why?

PDT flow was written specifically to make sure pilots without a degree can flow and it cant be changed.
