How do you come to that conclusion? Really I’ve seen just as many useless ex CFI captains as I have part 135, rotary transition, military etc

Simple, part of sitting left seat at a regional is getting the guy sitting next to you ready to upgrade, hint this is why the FAA is changing “Command leadership” to “command leadership mentorship” AC 121-43. And having a background teaching people and understanding what the laws of primacy, intensity etc are and understanding what the hierarchy of human needs is goes a long way towards helping new hires become competent CA’s. Your FO isn’t going to learn by you yelling at them like an impotent drill instructor, and they aren’t going to learn if you force them to fly exactly your way (I’m looking at some of the micromanaging lifers with that one).

Now I’m not saying you should be instructing your FO’s, far from that. But you should be allowing them to make decisions and get more comfortable and confident in their job, not walking on eggshells around you.

I would bet it’s because of work ethic. Getting the CFI rating is a lot of work and takes real commitment. Getting a type rating is a cake walk by comparison. I’ve got a Masters degree and the CFI rating took as much work and dedication as anything I’ve ever done. Not to mention defending yourself against students trying to kill you all day makes you at least a decent stick.

Yeah, some of the "I don't want to teach, or be around people at all" CPLs are underwhelming by comparison. They should probably stay in single pilot freight, etc.

To piggy back, been around 135/91 Corp guys and you can tell who we’re CFIs. Those guys had a talent for training people well and could explain systems or a scenario really well. The other guys were great pilot, but you can tell they lack patience. It’s anecdotal, of course, but that’s my observation

So where in the pecking order does that leave someone that has 1600 TT, ATP in hand, and 700+ ME (BS, MS, and MBA degrees too)? Never been an instructor as I've been on active duty as a Logistics Officer for 27+ years. All my time is part 91, single pilot IFR with over 1,300 hours cross-country - most being 200+ NM trips all over the US. Would I be better off going corporate? The silence from the regionals I've applied to so far is slowly killing me...

Make sure your apps are done well and professionally and you’ll get the call.

I agree. Cfi makes a big difference imho. If I were a hiring dept I would favor 75% cfi 25% 135…

I agree with this 200%…

Has anyone had any luck securing a CJO prior to meeting ATP mins? I'm about to pass 1,300 and am wondering if I should start dropping applications, I should be at mins within the next 2.5 months. I know prior to covid it was standard to interview before reaching mins, but not sure what things look like since hiring has resumed.

Someone can correct me if I’m wrong, but submitting now shouldn’t hurt anything. Just keep updating your hours on airline apps and keep refreshing your application date and once you hit the number they are filtering by you’ll get a call.

yeah, if anything you are late. I already had a job offer and a class date when I was 2.5 mouths out from mins(pre COVID).
