So I got the JFK as a base, so commuting is what is going to have to happen. My wife and I are looking to move closer to JFK to a city that is commutable. We live in PHX now. Should I depend on the CASS or CASS and pass travel While choosing. Just wondering if I could depend on CASS to get me to JFK. Currently we are thinking about ATL or RDU (Raleigh).

a lotta commuters outta RDU, and Airtran is 70% commuters, and they are out of ATL, as well as DAL, you wont be the only one trying to get in and out of those to places...........just go to an airline that has a commuter clause

Who did you get on with? Don't just think of JFK. If you are going to be on reserve, and commuting, you probably will commute out the day before. Think about LGA, EWR, ACY, PHL, BOS...
I say these because you can catch a ride with a fellow commuter, or taxi, or public transport from LGA/EWR. ACY/PHL a a little far way, but still public transport an option. BOS; PLENTY of "Shuttle" flights to LGA, JFK.
I used to commute out of BOS to DTW. NWA was great, however in the summers, a lot of non-rev types going to sight see. Used to fill up the 757, and this is before CASS. So I would try to get a Shuttle flight (DAL, or US) to LGA, then on us to DTW. I have also done BOS-EWR-DTW. BOS-ORD-DTW.
On the way back same thing. And ONCE was desperate to get home, and the BOS flight was full, I got on the PVD flight, and took a bus to BOS.
MANY options!!!

You might consider JB from PHX to BOS and catch a shuttle flight to JFK. The airbus had two jumpseats and I believe JB is first come first serve. I know a guy who used to redeye to BOS from PHX and get in at like 7am or something and then catch the first shuttle flight to NYC to start his trip.

Getting to LGA isn't too bad - I used to commute to and from NYC and CVG. LGA worked out best for me, but JFK was not too tough either from CVG. There are busses every 1/2 hour from LGA to JFK for $10. EWR is a little harder - you can take a bus from EWR to Grand Central (NYC) and jump on the JFK bus there - both busses are "non-stop".
CVG had lots of options to NYC each day, but I think ATL would have more.
