RFD ANC commute on UPS?
RFD ANC commute on UPS?
Just applied to UPS, but a guy has to plan in case he is fortunate...
I don't live too far from RFD, so reading of RFD direct ANC is encouraging.
Hoping for some detail about commuting to ANC direct out of RFD(and back).
Is this 7 "days"/wk? Any more than one/day? Backup of ORD reasonable?
Any approximate schedule?

First of all, good luck on getting the interview!
Next, to answer some of your questions, I personally don't commute to ANC, but I live in the ORD area. I looked up our RFD-ANC-RFD, and what I found out is that they run 5x a week, no weekends, on a 767, and the sampling of flights that I did showed no jumpseaters. There is only 1 flt a day on this route. I have noticed that sometimes a 747 is scheduled to go ANC-ORD-SDF, but I'm not sure how long this will last. I may have been a short stint thing because I have not seen it lately.
ORD id a very reasonable backup. FX, Kalitta, NWA Cargo, and possible Polar fly between these cities. I know some of our pilots use FX out of ORD going to ANC.

I don't think you'd have any trouble commuting to ANC out of RFD. Plus, we have a clause in the contract that if a UPS jet breaks and causes you to miss an assignment, you just lose pay for that assignment. If you were a reserve guy, you'd lose 4 hours pay and just go up the next day.
That's how I understand it, anyway. Someone correct me if I'm wrong. Not sure you'd want to "push it" until you're off probation, as well.

I realize you don't have the contract yet(or the job) but if you miss a flight d2 a cancelled UPS j/s, you lose the value of that trip, but cannot be disciplined. That said, if you are on probation, most if not all protections of the contract do not apply. Early arrival at the domicile is definitely better than trying to explain yourself to an ACP. If you are headed to ANC to start a reserve period and can't get on the j/s for whatever reason, a tactical sick call maybe your best bet. Not that I've ever done that....Good luck with the process.

If I'm fortunate enough to interview, at least I'll be able to answer a question on how I feel about ANC as a base(sounds great).

No sweat. Asking questions ahead of time is better than whining later! I've been flying into ANC both in the mil and airlines since 86 and I love the place. So does the Mrs, but can't take the winter darkness. If you can find a way to live there on first year pay + the stipend (1500/month) I would recommend it. J/S through RFD was going to be my plan if assigned to ANC, but ORD is a very good backup. One of the guys that runs this site is a UPS pilot who is very connected to the people running the hiring process. Cruise all the info on this site and make sure you have a feel for all aspects of the company's business before you get called for the interview. They seem to appreciate a broader view of the company, beyond the airline. Good luck!
