Eagle provides wipes onboard the aircraft. I use these to clean the headset prior to using them. Some of them are pretty well used.

Has anyone tried the new DC X11?

I use the Telex 5x5 with custom ear molds. No headband, no big ear cups or pieces. Comfortable, featherweight, and you can wear a hat and sunglasses with big bands and no problems. It takes up about as much room in your kitbag as a granola bar.

I have tried the DC x11 they're pretty nice for a 'cheaper' (than bose) headset. they don't really provide a lot of pressing force against your head, so i didn't think that they sealed very well. I've got the bose now and they're an amazing headset. I wouldn't want to wear anything else. I've tried the Telex and they were big and bulky. Next to the Bose I would got with the x11 just because of the size for sure though.

I use the Telex 750 with earplugs, works great, and really cheap. Plus you dont get a headache from wearing the community DC's. You can get a set of 750's used on ebay for probably $75. Fits great in the flight case.

i tried using my telex 5x5 on a flight and the background noise was awful, do you know how to fix that?

I just put 7600 in the transponder, put on my goggles and leather cap, and off we go....

yeah here's what you do. It's kind of a pain, but if you do this, it should work fine.

(during cruise at high speed when the noise is the greatest):
Take a normal headset or a company David Clark and plug in the headphone jack only. Wear the David Clark headset and plug in your Telex 5x5 into the mic jack only. Turn hot pic on. You should hear the god-aweful HHSSSSSHHHHH sound. Take a mini eye glass screw driver and on the side of the Telex 5x5 headset adjust the mic gain until the noise is fairly low (if you have never done this you will have a little black tape dot covering the hole with the adjustment screw). It is an ULTRA SENSITIVE adjustment and if you turn it down too low you wont be able to hear your voice.

After the noise is about right put the mic under your lip and test out the mic volume to see if you can hear yourself (with the David Clark) headset on. Fine tune it until you find a good volume of yourself and the cockpit noise is tolerable. You wont be able to make all the noise go away but you can make it much quieter. (damn those loud EMBs!!!)

One more thing to keep in mind with the Telex 5x5... your voice will be the greatest volume and the cockpit noise will be the lowest if you position the boom mic right underneath your bottom lip touching your skin. The noise is a little louder and your voice will be quieter if you wear the boom mic right over your mouth like a David Clark boom mic.

Sorry for bringing back an old thread guys. Does anyone know how these headsets work without earplugs? I bought a Plantronics MS200 on ebay for pretty cheap. I like the design, but it is not for the 145. It's way too loud in the cockpit, and I don't like putting an earplug in the other ear. Even with the other ear plugged, i was missing transmissions either from the Captain or ATC. I like what I see with the Telex 750, but I don't want to put an earplug in each ear either. Any info is appreciated.

P.S. If anyone does have a quieter cockpit, the MS200 is now for auction on Ebay.

The Telex 750's are absolute JUNK, if you dislike wearing earplugs (as I do) then DO NOT BUY THEM! If you’re unsure then grab a pair of earplugs and try wearing them for 8 hours a day, 15-20 days a month while talking to people and trying to work! The sound quality of the 750’s is CRAP; you might as well slap a set of headset from 1982 on your head.

The Telex 850's are great with fantastic noise cancelling (no batteries needed,) and there sound quality is top notch, but they are little pricy (you can get them off EBay for around $350). I have the 850's and I'm about to sell them seeing I'm going back to the EMB as CA so I need something for loud T-Props, that's why I just bought the Bose Quite Comfort/UFLYMIKE setup (cost you between $450 and $500). I absolutely love them, they work great with IPods when flying and they double as headsets when commuting or deadheading. In my mind they're well worth the money.
