Eagle Gear Problems

Initial reports from inside sources are that the crew didn't have any indications that the gear wasn't down and locked. Rather they impacted after initiating a go around due to an excessive float down the runway outside of the TDZ for the hold short clearance they had received.

The approach sounds normal on the ATC tapes. The go around sounds like the crew was unaware that they had struck the ground (at least initially). It's pretty damn hard to ignore a gear horn and IMO, impossible to ignore an ongoing "TOO LOW! GEAR! TOO LOW! GEAR!" audio warning.

As the article mentioned, their flaps (and who knows what else) were mangled...a damaged jet might not clear the obstacles if it couldn't raise gear and/or flaps (to reduce drag) after a go-around.
Sounds like they may have initiated the GA due to excessive float and without knowing about the gear problem at the time...that would make more sense.

I think they were damned if they did and damned if they didn't. If they had 3 green and no gear they were completely unaware of what was happening to them when touching down. There were no rescue trucks waiting for them, they could have floated and gone off the end of the runway or the side of the runway at high speed. Of course, taking off ain't so great if u just damaged your flaps and ailerons. Kudos to the crew.....everyone went home to their families tonight.
