Those guys are probably going to get in trouble for taking off again...that will be hard to justify.

how so? is it good practice to just finish the landing when gear is up and you didn't know?

Initial reports from inside sources are that the crew didn't have any indications that the gear wasn't down and locked. Rather they impacted after initiating a go around due to an excessive float down the runway outside of the TDZ for the hold short clearance they had received.

how do you get three green lights with the gear up. if such a thing is even possible on an aircraft then thats some serious mechanical defect.

Stranger things have happened. All it takes is a mixed up electrical signal, or a bad symbol generator or one of a million other things that happen in electronic aircraft. Unlikely? Yes. Impossible? No.

The approach sounds normal on the ATC tapes. The go around sounds like the crew was unaware that they had struck the ground (at least initially). It's pretty damn hard to ignore a gear horn and IMO, impossible to ignore an ongoing "TOO LOW! GEAR! TOO LOW! GEAR!" audio warning.

If the airplane touches the runway, you must assume it was severly damaged and may be incapable of flight, so you finish the landing. In a prop plane the props will strike first, which prett much destroys them, so a go-around would be near suicidal...you would probably gain just enough altitude to make it really hurt when you came down for good.

As the article mentioned, their flaps (and who knows what else) were mangled...a damaged jet might not clear the obstacles if it couldn't raise gear and/or flaps (to reduce drag) after a go-around.

Sounds like they may have initiated the GA due to excessive float and without knowing about the gear problem at the time...that would make more sense.

The gear being up, for whatever reason, could certainly contribute to the alleged float.

I think they were damned if they did and damned if they didn't. If they had 3 green and no gear they were completely unaware of what was happening to them when touching down. There were no rescue trucks waiting for them, they could have floated and gone off the end of the runway or the side of the runway at high speed. Of course, taking off ain't so great if u just damaged your flaps and ailerons. Kudos to the crew.....everyone went home to their families tonight.
