I would still apply when you meet the mins, but I wouldn't hit it hard (meaning job fairs, getting recommendations, etc) until I got my 1000 PIC Turbine. Ideally, I would want 1500-2000 before making a move.

I know a lot of people aren't cut out for the military but this makes me think twice about the regionals and living below the poverty level for the first couple years.
It's all a gamble. There are plenty of military guys that skipped regionals altogether and are flying in the Majors right now. There are also plenty that got turned down by those majors and went to regionals or quit flying altogether. For every guy I meet in the Jumpseat that said "I was prior military" I meet another guy at my regional that says the same thing. I meet even more in real life that say "Yea, I used to fly but couldn't get on anywhere so I'm doing something else". Not knocking military training or flying...just saying it's not the promised land of aviation anymore. Everyone's gotta pretty even shot of landing a job.

Crazier things can happen. My cousin didnt get hired by Xjet, then was hired by Continental a few months later....guess he was glad he didnt get hired! He was 23 years old....

Also my uncle flew with a 24 yr old FO on the 757 or 767 (hes on both not sure which one)

If you meet the military requirements (age, education, medical) you would be silly not to attempt that route unless you are philosophically unsuitable for military service. The career benefits outweigh the hardships, IMO. USAF or ANG are best because you will probably not get locked into helicopters, unlike navy/usmc.

That doesn't exactly jive with my experiences...almost all of my military buds who flew fixed wing are at major airlines. There are only a few exceptions...

Super hard-charging guys with advanced educations who wanted to do more with their lives...they deliberately chose high-powered civilian careers instead of airlines.

Cargo guys who got out with less than 1000 TPIC...they do the regional for a while and then move up as soon as they get the TPIC. A guy with regional 121 AND military training is very competetive...more so than your stock RJ captain.
