This is 100% not correct. Alter-ego is a big word (kind of like Scab Jr.), lets be real careful about throwing it around.

Go! is a brand name operated by Mesa Air Group (MAG) on the Mesa Airlines operating certificate. The pilots are mesa pilots, part of Alpa, and not an alter-ego of any sort. Mesa also operates Fredom Airlines and Air Midwest (both on seperate certificates, but the pilots are all on the mesa alpa list).

Fredom airlines USED to be an alter-ego, but the old freedom (Freedom A) was disassembled and exists only as a name on the operating certificate.

GoJet is another alto-ego, but is not related to mesa or Go! in any way at all (other than Hulas and JO being scumbags of the same caliber).

I used to be stationed in Hawaii when Iwas in the Army. I lived there for three years. I enjoyed it

I had a friend who went to fly for go! (Mesa). He was hired at a job fair in Honolulu and told he'd have no problems getting HNL as his domicile. But in reality, he was lied to. He first got bounced around throughout Mesa's route network. I believe he was based in CLT, ORD, and PHX before he actually made it to HNL. He quit less than a year after being hired. He is now flying for Air Med in Hawaii.

On the word "Haole" (hah-oh-leh). It means "without breath". Native Hawaiians used to kiss eachother by rubbing noses and breathing in. Like sniffing each other. White westerners (Captain Cook's arrival) didn't do this breathing greeting so they dubbed them "without breath".

The guy who started this thread said he has family there. I am sure he knows what he is getting into. I am from the Big Island, currently flight instructing on the mainland looking for my next career sometime next year. I am hoping to get to a mainland regional to build some time a few years and either make it to Island Air, Aloha Airlines, or Hawaiian Airlines so I can go home.

Aloha has been hiring this year. They even took a bunch of Mesa guys. Hawaiian has been slowly recalling their furloughees. They most recently posted a recall for 13 Boeing 767 FOs.

Hawaiian has been historically the hardest airline to get into. You need to really have connections there. IIRC, you need 2 letters of recommendation from their current line pilots just to get an interview.

Good luck.
lol, yes you are right, I know what I am getting myself into. I have lived there 12 yrs.
Where do u flight instruct at?
I just bought a ticket back to HI, and while Im back im gonna check out the jobs and maybe see if there are any flight instructing jobs and see if they are worth staying for.
and as for all the negativity about HI, yes it is expensive, yes there is an ice problem, and yes sometimes Haole's are discriminated, BFD... maybe 1 or 2 times I got crap from a hawaiian for being a "haole"...and 1 of those 2 times, the guy that was giving me crap was on ice lol...

i heard from many different sources to stay away....far away... A friend of mine left her internship with Pacific Wings early cuz she said it was a horrible place. My old instrument flight instructor knew another girl who did the same, she left the intership early because managment was terrible. My old CFI also told me he heard of a pilot being brought to a hotel by managment and then having some guys kick his a$$.....for what? i dont know....is it true? I don't know, I wasn't there to witness it, but i dont know why my instructor would lie like that lol.

I flew on them from HNL to the big island....we stopped in I think it was Maui to drop off and pick up some pax. My dad and I were sitting in the further most aft seats. The pax get off, get their bags and leave. The new pax come walking out, the pilot loads their bags, and opens the door for them, and they board. After the pilot is done loading the bags, he walks back around to the cockpit forgetting to close the door. He gets in, puts his seat belt on, starts flipping switches, at that time I look at my dad and say, "i think he's getting ready to go." My dad and I just kinda sit there thinking, there is no way this is happening, he must be getting the WX or something....Well, turns out he was getting ready to start the engines right before my dad yells from the back, "Hey you might need to close this door," the pilot looks back and says, "ohhhhh oh yeah..........Im just trying to get outta here quick and forgot about that." Turns out not only was the door still open but that pole they prop the tail up with while loading bags was still attached.

Default PAC Wings heads up

Nicks,

Thanks for the gouge. Looks like Pacific Wings and Go are scratched off the list. With Aloha, Hawaiian, and Island Air not hiring, I wonder what turbine flying jobs are available? Sounds like a bad time to look for employment in HI.

Cheers bro,

I am flight instructing part-time at the University of North Dakota while finishing school.

As far as flight instructor jobs in Hawaii, I'd check to see if the Honolulu Community College Aviation program is hiring. Call the Pacific Aerospace Training Center to find out... 808-837-8095. Their flight program is based out of the Kalaeloa Airport (old Barber's Point) though, so unless you live on that side of the island, it is quite a drive.

HCC is no longer dealing with UND. They are now contracting through Galvin Flight Services. They are flying brand new Diamond aircraft.

Of course there are other flight schools on the HNL south ramp. http://www.wecanfly.com/flyhi/fbo.htm

On the neighbor islands you may find some FBO's looking for instructors, but those are typically harder to sustain work. There are some tour companies that fly Cessna's of various models (172, 206, 207, 208) but you most definitely need to meet part 135 minimums first.

If you want hawaiian or aloha, i would suggest staying on the mainland and finding yourself a descent regional, get some pic time, and then apply. if you go back to the islands now, it'll take you ages to become competitive. you gotta figure youre competing with all of the island air guys who want to move up and a flight instructor job aint gonna cut it. differentiate your resume from theirs. it is very important to those airlines that you have ties to hawaii, which it seems like you do. they also value mainland experience ex. glass time, wx, atc, jet time, 121, etc. so just suck it up a few more years and then go back to the islands straight to hawaiian or aloha. das wut i stay dooin bruddah.

Yup, I agree. After instructing, I am looking to spend about 3 years on the mainland building time at a regional before attempting to head home.

I had so much hope for getting into Hawaiian Airlines but I fear I don't have enough connections despite a few contacts there. There has also got be a lot of pilot's sons and daughters just waiting for HA to start hiring again. I was told as long as you meet the mins, HA will hire 1) relatives, 2) people they know.

I'm not sure how easy it is to get hired at AQ, but a couple of guys I know got hired over the summer. One came from American Eagle (who roughed it out on the mainland for a couple years), the other Island Air (who first roughed it out through Corporate Air in the islands). Both guys are from Hawaii.

One strategy in my mind is to get into Island Air. The flow through from Island Air to Aloha and Hawaiian is pretty traditional. The whole idea is networking and helping each other out.

I did my flight training at Flight School Hawaii. They have a great programs there that fit anyone. Wallace is a great guy. There is some great potential to build twin time there with there Aztec's which I miss dearly. Give them a call or go to www.flightschoolhawaii.com

IFR flying in hawaii is pretty boring. Go to the FSS at the NW end of the field and ask for the preferred route list. This will tell you what you WILL get regardless of what you file. I still have mine for nostalgia. Keep in mind that there are only 14 airports in that state and 11 I think that you can land at. The grind can get old, but as a CFI, it will allow you to focus on teaching more since you already know what is going to happen.

As a student in Hawaii, it can get damn intimidating. However, it will make your students AWESOME on the radio and get the exposure to working with several layers of ATC and with commerical operations. I highly recommend it.
