Silly question

Default Silly question

I know most of you will think that this is a silly or stupid question, but I obviously don't know the answer so hear goes.

In a PIC - SIC type crew, if your the SIC (or FO) and your flying (pilot flying -or- sole manipulator) how do you log that time? How do you log the time when your the pilot not-flying?

You're a required crew member regardless. You're also the second in command regardless. It's all SIC.

It's all SIC, but you can log it as "SIC acting as PIC" for the purposes of logging 250 hours of PIC time for an ATP.

FAR 61.159.a:
(4) 250 hours of flight time in an airplane as a pilot in command, or as second in command performing the duties of pilot in command while under the supervision of a pilot in command, or any combination thereof, which includes at least—

(i) 100 hours of cross-country flight time; and

(ii) 25 hours of night flight time.
So you can't log it as PIC, but you CAN count it towards the ATP PIC Requirement.

You're right... that is a silly question, but we have all asked it in some form at some time. I'm surprised no one chimed in with a smart @SS answer. I would, but I'm not feeling particularly witty at the moment... 24 hour sit in SWF will suck all the life and charm right out of you. Any other "silly" questions?

No such thing as a bad question. I'll ask this one for you before you have to

2:But what separates the Captain from the FO if they are both flying? Why can't the FO actually log it as PIC?

Answer: Because the captain is the person that signs for the aircraft. He is the designated one to be the final decision and accept responsibility for all operations of the aircraft. Therefore while you might perform the same duties within operations of flight, these duties happen under his command. You are a required crew member so any time you are performing the actions of a crew member you may log it as SIC. Only when you have your PIC type rating and are the one that signs for the aircraft may you log it as PIC.

Exactly Correct. "SIC acting as PIC" is a type of flight time that exists ONLY on an 8710 with the ATP box checked.

DO NOT log it as PIC. Log SIC, but make a note about acting as PIC. Also get the real PIC to sign for it, and gett written permission from your airline before you do this...otherwise it may be an OPSPEC violation, which you don't want documented in your log book

DO NOT put this time on your resume or any job application forms.

Also when you are an SIC, you may log...

Night, XC, Turbine, ME: Always, regardless of who is flying.
Landings: Your leg only.
IMC/Approaches: Your leg only. You can (and should) log IMC/Apps when the autopilot is on...you are "monitoring the AP, so it still counts.
