I too have had issues with briefers (for starters I hardly get one from the nearby area, so none of them are familar with the airport identifiers, etc). I did have a breifer tell me that a Bell 1900 gave a PIREP, and one also told me that the only runway at the airport I was departing from was closed, I should have called the tower to let them know that one.
But, in all fairness, it has not been too long since they took over, and I have had very little problems with the New York briefers, which is where I normally fly. The largest problems I have encountered come in when I get some briefer who is not in my area (i.e. Western or Central US). I am also pretty sure that I have gotten people being trained too, probably when the instructor left to go to the bathroom or something.

The FSS system is a mess right now. In the last two weeks I've had them lose my flight plan (twice), change my plan's destination, miss a TFR (glad I looked it up myself) and insist on giving me winds aloft up to FL240 for my 172. I've also been on hold 30 minutes before getting a briefer and a bunch of miscellaneous other minor issues. I used to budget about five minutes for filing and getting a brief, now I expect about 15.
Granted, there are still some very good people there, but it often feels like 4/5 just hopped out of a clown car.

Sorry that the trhead got a bit off track, but I have one more response about FSS. It is not only a problem with pre-flight briefings, but an issue of trying to pick up clearances at smaller back country airports. I realize that most airlines do not have to deal with this, but I have waited 30 minutes or more to get to talk to a person in my area that could get me a clearance. 1 800 wx brief used to get you a local briefer. A month ago I called from upstate new york and got a controller in Prescott, AZ who proceeded to infrom me where he was and that he couldn't help me because he didn't even have the number for Boston Center. Thanks for the help Flight Service.

To drift further off thread, try to get the numbers for the Centers and TRACONs in the area. I used to have to routinely call PHL directly for a clearance. Our airport was out of range for the RCO and FSS usually would take far too long to get the clearance.
