Timing question for career transition
I am getting ready to leave my job as a chemist to finish my CFI ratings and hopefully join the ranks of regional airline pilots. My question is when is the best time to go, specifically, I can leave anywhere from December 2007 to December 2008, the choice is mine. I have about 300hrs with about 130 multi. I was thinking about instructing at Ari-Ben where I trained a few years ago immediately after I leave, well as soon as I get my CFIs. Would it be wiser to just go ASAP i.e. in Jan 08, or hang onto my current paying gig for a while because the pay is better? I don't want to jeopardize opportunities by waiting, and I'm thinking that I might be better served to just go soon and hit the ground running.

Just depends on how bad you want to fly in a part 121 job.
I suggest instructing for a while. There all kinds of professinal pilots out there, and CFIS are too.
I have never been one to tell someone with you amount of time not to seek a job, but you have a good job already. There would be alot gained by teaching for a little bit. I mean no disrepect but stay with the "hobby" for now, get you feet wet teaching, and then decide.
Knowing what I know now, if I had your job, I would likely stay there.
Just my thought

Actually professional CFIs are becoming a reality. I know of two schools in my area that now employ full time instructors with salary and benefits. One place was saying 50-60k. If you like to teach and want to be home every night, instructing is getting to be a decent gig.

I'm leaving the company due to a site closure. The option would be to move to Cinncinati and I'd much rather fly. I can always come back to chemistry. I make 55k/yr now and think that I'll be back at that salary within 4years. I'm looking forward to the changes ahead.
