PSA Jr Bases ???

Anyone know ... odds of getting CLT ???

trackpilot 12-09-2007 06:32 PM

I think Dayton and Knoxville are the jr bases. Everyone wants to go to CLT for some reason... Including me!!!:D
Any PSA guys know what the reserve times are looking like now at the different bases?

Jetjock87 12-09-2007 06:54 PM

me and my dad have done some researching on the routes out of these places and it seems like CLT has a bunch of destinations as it should, while i can only find a couple 3-4 destinations each out of DAY and TYS....anyone else on here a PSA pilot flying out of these bases? Would sure like to know about it...
I would def like to get CLT myself, location and route wise. PSA is saying on the websight that they are hiring to all bases. Im guessing it will be a little bit easier to get CLT then it has in the past because all the J4J are leaving....and im guessing those pilot are mostly based out of CLT. So may FO slots be opening up as upgrades take place??? Just taking guesses here....

OnMyWay 12-10-2007 06:59 AM

I was told during the interview that CLT was a senior FO base and reserve times are much longer. I would assume that is because CLT is a hub and this is where commuters prefer to be............Dayton/Knoxville here I come!

Jumperno64 12-10-2007 07:08 AM

TYS is a beutiful part of the country. Right next to the smokey mountains. If you love nature that is the base I would pick. Also TN is growing. Just make sure if you decide to buy a house there that you can get water. The water table is dropping and there is a shortage.

Jetjock87 12-10-2007 08:39 AM

any word on routes out of DAY and TYS? I am aware there is no route map at the moment due to frequent changes of routes...

weasil 12-10-2007 11:34 AM

DAY and TYS are outstations. You generally fly into a hub at the start of a trip and go from there. You don't fly in and out of an outstation all day long usually.
For example from DAY you might fly to PHL or CLT and then proceed to do hub and spoke stuff from there (EX: CLT to GSP to CLT and then CLT to ORF to PHL and then in and out of PHL with the last leg of the trip going back to your base).

Love the TYS-turns! And outstation-basing is fantastic...easy drive to work, easy parking, easy security, friendly gate-agents, you still get the hustle-and-bustle of the big hub, but still get to come home to a relaxed atmosphere..

Jetjock87 12-10-2007 11:50 AM

haha ok that makes alot more sense. As you can tell i am brand new to this stuff.....

bradeku1008 12-10-2007 01:08 PM

What's the upgrade time at PSA?

Jetjock87 12-10-2007 01:11 PM

At the interview they had stated 3 years dropping to two

bradeku1008 12-10-2007 01:19 PM

Thanks, thinking about applying. I have 650 TT and building fast, and 40 multi and building about and hour every other week. Think they will want a jet bridge course?

What's so bad about being on reserve? Your still getting pretty much the same pay with less work, right? Just not building those flight hours as fast.

Big negative. Minimum guarantee of 75 hrs/mo (usually) as opposed to a line-holder crediting sometimes upwards of 100/mo. In addition, you're not making Per Diem. Finally - you're on call, never being able to work your personal schedule around work. It's a lose-lose-lose...unless your company is fat on pilots and you're sitting at home with the family comfortably.

hoser073 12-10-2007 02:27 PM

Speaking of Reserve times, anyone have a current outlook of RSV time at each of the 3 bases?

Jetjock87 12-10-2007 02:54 PM

i was hired with 6 and change total time and 50.2 multi with a crj course from my school (erau). i know of people that were hired with about the same times and no crj course. I do have to say though they like knowing u did take one....

bradeku1008 12-10-2007 03:06 PM

Is PSA a good comany to work for? I dont know alot about them. Just what the internet has to offer. How is the management, pay, etc...

Wow so that's like an extra $400 or so per month that you can make, huh? I guess that's why reserve sucks. I was just thinking that you get paid to not work. So i didn't know why everyone hated it. haha Shows how much i know.
Guess i'll be changing my mind from CLT to either DAY or TYS then.:D

weasil 12-10-2007 08:27 PM

Unless you are planning on moving to whatever domicile you are in then reserve is a miserable existence and the schedulers at PSA treat reserves like crap!

Please make sure you go somewhere and sit reserve, my friend. Can't wait to hear how much you enjoy it

Come back and post when you've actually been around the block once or twice...you're a perfect example of the "me" generation...a real man actually likes to earn his keep.

huh???

texaspilot76 12-11-2007 03:14 PM

CLT is the most senior base, but you could easily hold it out of training or within a month or so. Reserve is running about 6 months in CLT and 2 months in TYS. Not sure about DAY, but who the hell would want to go there?

Upgrade should be dropping to 2 years or less.

PSA is pretty good to work for, but the worst part is scheduling. They are ruthless. Once you get off reserve, it is awesome, because you wont have to deal with them much.

Preferential hiring with US Airways is another plus of being at PSA.

Hope that helps.

bradeku1008 12-11-2007 03:52 PM

Thanks. I live about 25min south of DAY so it would be sweet to fly out of there. I know an old flight instructor that works there, he is from Middletown Ohio. Last I heard he liked it there. I think I will apply this week. How long is is before you get an e-mail of phone call?

I think you might have misunderstood his post?

Jetjock87 12-11-2007 05:51 PM

hey ive been doing some simple math problems, yea i know multiplication isnt THAT in depth haha but on here at APC it states there are 565 pilots at PSA. On THEIR websight, they state they are hiring 40 per month through 2008, which comes out to 480 (DUH).APC says 40 for Jan Feb and Mar. Thats alot of movement and growth according to their numbers. Am i wrong? I am BRAND NEW to this and just hired by PSA out of the NOV 20th interview soooo take it easy on me. I know alot of J4J are leaving, but do they have a/c on order too or are they planning on losing alot of pilots or both? Maybe to US Airways with all the retiring in the future? Thoughts?

hoser073 12-12-2007 09:52 AM

Any opinions on future growth of US flying... more 200's or 700's?

Jetjock87 12-12-2007 11:09 AM

looks like there are a ton of PSA pilots here that are just full of answers! 1 at a time....

MAGNUM 12-12-2007 12:24 PM

Im at PSA right now. They are not letting any FOs get CLT right now. You will get DAY right out of the gate but you should be able to get TYS before you get out of sims or a couple weeks after. Upgrade is a year and a half to two years (per the vice pres. of ops). They are hiring 40/month til Mar. They are losing pilots just as fast as they are making them. The training dept. is slammed full. Get in while you can.

Jetjock87 12-12-2007 12:36 PM

good to hear about the upgrade. i just got in..class starts jan 20th....any word on new a/c? How about going up to montreal for sim training...it seems they are going to use both Montreal and CLT for sim training when it gets too overloaded at CLT. Also i had a friend finish IOE about a month ago or so and he was getting 2 weeks off durring training because of the back long...is that still happening? How about stability at PSA....

MAGNUM 12-12-2007 01:02 PM

As far as a/c im not really sure but i heard they want to get rid of the 200s and get 700s but that is just talk i think. Sims right now are in clt, montreal, and st.louis. They just bought alot more sim time. Yes everything is backed up here, they can't train them fast enough. Stability looks good as far as i can see. It is def in our favor. Make sure you don't get behind in training because they don't have time for people that are struggling. As i said before there is ALOT of people to train. Be ready to study night and day because you guys are on a very tight schedule. KNOW YOUR LIMITATIONS AND MEMORY ITEMS BEFORE U GO. KNOW THEM COLD. O AND YOUR INSTRUMENT SKILLS SHOULD BE A NON ISSUE IN TRAINING SO MAKE SURE YOU KNOW HOW TO SHOOT AN APPROACH OR JUST FLY IFR PERIOD.

Jetjock87 12-12-2007 01:30 PM

yes i was talking to the chief pilot as we were walking up to do the sim eval and he showed me the sim room...it was funny cause he was ranting on how bad the 200 was. Limitations on the 200 are already memorized (school jet course) and i had tought IFR for 11 months straight....Jan 20th is taking too long!

Atwoo155 12-13-2007 05:21 PM

Hey Jetjock87 when did you interview? Where did you do your RJ course?

Atwoo155 12-13-2007 05:42 PM

JetJock87 why did you pick the 20th date instead of the 7th? Just wondering.

Jetjock87 12-13-2007 06:15 PM

Nov. 20th and ERAU, and because i am prob gonna need some time to move some stuff from my apartment into storage for the time i am in training. I wont be around the apartment for the holidays.

Jetjock87 12-13-2007 06:19 PM

are u/have u interviewed with PSA?

Atwoo155 12-13-2007 06:51 PM

I think I was in your ERAU CRJ class. But I didn't want to use your name. Did you just take the class? And yes I interviewed and got the possition. I took the Jan 7th Class however.

Jetjock87 12-13-2007 06:54 PM

i had taken the class in the spring semester

Jetjock87 12-13-2007 06:57 PM

when did u take the course? are u instructing at the school?

Atwoo155 12-13-2007 06:57 PM

Oh nevermind then. Different ERAU Inst. that got the job at PSA. There have been quite a few I think.
