Picking Which Airline to Work For
#1
I enjoy reading the posts on this website, but don't fall into the trap of picking which airline you're going to work for based on the posts written within. The BEST thing to do...go to the airport and actually talk to a number of pilots from different airlines.

That is the first time I have heard someone say that hear.
Not to say it is has not been said before, just never saw it.
I agree, get out there and network and you will find out what is going on.
I know exactly what I was in for when I went TSA, and for that reason I have neither been disappointed or rewareded.
But there was serveral from my school that went there.
So far I dont have regrets

True, although this website is still a great source of information industry-wide, especially if you live out in the sticks (i.e. Kansas haha) and aren't close to an airport or a great deal of pilots. The key is to choose what's right for you based on your priorities at the time. Similar to the above poster and TSA, I have gotten along well enough (though life could of course be much better) at Great Lakes, because it suits what I wanted in an airline.

One thing I have noticed is that the really good places to work for do not get mentioned nearly as often as the bad places. Take Mesa for example.... how many threads on here talk about Mesa and how bad they are and why. Now look for RAH.... Sure there are a few that say they are a good place but not many supporting facts.
As for me I am three years + away from going into an interview, but I know exactly where I want to go(RAH), and thanks to many of the people on this site where I do not want to go.
I live in Eugene, OR and we do have an airport, but only a few carriers in and out of it. The good companies that do come in here have six year upgrades. The bad (I was told) make you sleep in the plane during layover.
One of the best lessons I have learned from these posts is that it is not just the pay.

They should. I don't think most of their newhires have been flying very long. It sounds like they just learned how to use the radio last week. The one I heard yesterday wouldn't be allowed to SOLO if it were me.
For the original poster, go wherever you get the best quality of life. I'd try to avoid commuting if it were me.

Best quality of life is going to equal good work rules. The company with the best contract is going to treat you the best.
Think of it this way. What company is eventually going to have me home with my family relaxing on days off the most, while making a solid income? That's what becomes most important after a few months on the job. Trust us.

The best airline to fly for, is the one you didn't pick.
People will always gripe about how green the grass is on the otherside, and what's true today...probably won't be in a year.
Go for base (QOL) and contracts...DO YOUR HOMEWORK...it could mean 5, 10 years of your life if you don't.
