ERAU, why are you anxious for the jet? Honestly, unless you live in ATL, ORD, MKE, DEN, COS, or TUS (jet only bases), it seems like it would be smarter to go to the brasilia. Since first year pay is the same regardless of equipment, and the monthly line guarantee is higher for the brasilia, it might be smart to go to the EMB-120. Plus you might gain some great experience and progress faster. Plus after that first year, you could either upgrade to EMB CAPT (and get the TPIC and more money) or you can upgrade to CRJ FO. Then upgrade to CRJ CAPT. Just a thought. If you want to live in a jet domicile, then you probably want the jet. Otherwise, you probably would want the EMB. Skywest guys, how does this sound?
A question for the Skywest guys. Say you get hired as CRJ FO, and you want to be domiciled in a brasilia only base (MRY, PDX, SAN, SBP), how soon before you can you change to brasilia FO, or do you need to wait until 1 year. How does downgrading at Skywest work (RJ capt to Bro capt, bro capt to rj fo, rj fo to bro fo)? What is the wait time in between downbids? |
There is definately stuff to do in SLC...
Disclaimer: Liquor laws are rather odd, but better than some places in the south. There is an large alternative culture of outdoor types in the area, you just have to find the right crowd. For legal reasons, you will have to buy a "Membership" at any bar/restaruant which serves hard liquor (usually $5-10 the first time you go). Food and drink: Downtown and Sugarhouse. Squatters downtown is good, stays open late. Fidler's Elbow is in Sugarhouse. I don't like Red Iguana, I prefer Tex-Mex I guess. Coffee: NONTHING around the airport area...it's all hispanic immigrants, and I guess they're not into espresso. There is a Starbucks downtown in the gateway mall (but it doesn't open as early as they usually do). If you're really hard up you could take the hotel shuttle to the airport (after you get your badge). Meat Market: Port-of-Call downtown. Malls: Gateway mall downtown is close, has a variety of restaruants, shops, and movies. Outdoor stuff: Ski, hike, mountain bike. Big Cottonwood Canyon, Little Cottonwood Canyon, Park City. City Creek trail is downtown, it's closer than anything else...hard ride up, fast ride down :D Mill Creek Canyon is not as well known, but great hiking and biking trails. If you don't have gear handy, at least go hiking. In addition to a car I'd bring a mountain bike if it's that time of year. REI is on 3300 S off of I-215. |

If you're a new-hire FO, you can upgrade as soon as the opportunity arises, you don't need to wait a year. Once you change airplanes, you have a one year seat lock...this will also prevent you from upgrading. CA's can change airplanes anytime after their one year lock has expired. The only limit on "downgrading" airplanes is the one year seat lock for your current airplane. If a CA choses to downgrade to FO (ie EMB CA to Jet FO) he incurs a TWO year seat lock. That's the only thing they discourage. |
Thanks for the responses.
It basically sounds fair. One year seat lock for changing equipment. Two year seat lock if you downgrade (CA to FO). If you are a new hire, you can upgrade whenever your seniority and times allow it (even inside your one year seat lock). There is only thing that sounds a little fishy to me. Say Bro upgrade at the base you want is 1.5 years. So you start as EMB FO, upgrade to CRJ FO at 1 year, but then you can't upgrade to EMB CAPT when your seniority and times allow it... you have to wait until year 2. It seems like anytime you have the seniority and times to go from FO to CAPT, that should be allowed (even with a 1 year seat lock). SAPA, any comment? |

Basically if the company spends the money to train you, they want one year of work out of you. If you're in the EMB and want to upgrade in it, then stay there. This is unrealistic anyway...nobody would subject themself to an extra training event just to fly the jet for 6 months. You'd be all confused when you went back to the Bro. |
Unless you love to spend time in training I would not want to learn the Bro and then a year later learn the CRJ and then go to training again for the upgrade. It'll be bad enough to go from the Emb 145 to the CRJ. I'm getting used to the motorcycle yoke. It's comfy~!

For example it works that same as going from bro fo to jet fo. Going jet fo to bro fo works the same way.

Hi All, first time poster. I am finishing ground school for the Bro on Tues. We have a guy in our class who is transitioning from RJ FO to Bro fo. Most people here think he's nuts but he wanted to be able to hold Portland and it was gonna take him forever in the rj, but he gets it straight out of IOE in the bro. I geuss it's all about what you want. Ok I gotta get back to studying now.
