Skywest New hires

How long did it take you to get your ID or to be put into CASS so that you could go home during training? Where you able to go home during the weekends? How is the area near the training hotel in Salt Lake? How quickly do they process the direct deposit? Are they trying really hard to get you in the Bro? What happens if you elect to skip a class to get the Jet?

If hired at the current pay rate, do you get pro rated to the new rate once it passes? Just a few questions... thanks.

naley70b 01-26-2008 08:02 PM

Well i'm from SLC, i don't work for OO but i do know the area around the hotel, i think ya'll stay in the candlewood or the ramada or something like that, anyways, its right next to Lofte's which is a great Pilot themed bar, Lofte is this french guy that is getting his pilot's license, real nice dude. You've also got the red iguana (best mexican food anywhere) which is about two miles towards downtown on north temple. Just hop on the bus and you're right downtown in about 5 mins. PM me if you have any questions about SLC, great town, just a little quit after 1 am.

SharkAir 01-26-2008 08:03 PM

I was home by the second weekend, so yes, I was able to go home on the weekends.

The area near the hotel is horrible. I would make friends with someone with a car, or just bring yours if you can. There's a few places to eat within about a ten minute walk, but I was there in the summer. Might be kind of cold this time of year. You can scam some free oatmeal and ramen from FlightSafety across the street, though. And if you're lucky enough to be in the Comfort Suites, you can have breakfast there and then you're set.

In my case, direct deposit was set up within two weeks, I think.

My understanding is that the pay will be pro-rated from January 16th. TonyWilliams would probably be the guy to ask. I'm sure he'll be on here any minute to tell you.

That's good to hear.... at Eagle I was able to go home almost every weekend right up till the beginning of SIms. I don't think the area can be as bad as the Admiral in DFW... well, I did enjoy the $1 beers from the hotel's restaurant. How close is the hotel to the airport and do they provide a shuttle from the training center to the airport?

Yeah, they have shuttles to and from the training center. I only stayed at the Candlewood once, when I interviewed. The Brasilia drivers stay at the Red Lion downtown, but I seem to remember the bus ride from the Candlewood being about 10 minutes, 15 tops.

ExperimentalAB 01-26-2008 08:11 PM

The area isn't bad, it's just lacking for things to do. Bring a car, or befriend one who was smarter than you and brought theirs ;)

In hindsight, I should have enjoyed SLC a bit more than I did...But I wasn't built for the heat, and it can get brutally hot even in the early summer. Again, there is plenty to do, just have some wheels.

Seatownflyer 01-26-2008 08:11 PM

They put our class up in the Red Lion downtown. Free breakfast every morning but the shuttle was craptastic. Pretty easy to get around without it though.

DON*T HATE ERAU 01-26-2008 08:13 PM

Where do they put the flight attendants at?

The hotel is literally across the street from the airport. It's about a 5-10 minute drive to the terminal. When I was there (and I assume it's still like this) the Candlewood (aka Candlehood) didn't technically run their own shuttle, but contracted out with Park n Jet across the street. That was fine though; you could get a ride on demand at any hour. Comfort Suites runs their own van. I think they might use a third hotel, too, but I can't remember.

Far, far away from you.

My class even got a nice "stay away" speech from a charming man named Verdean.

ID will take 2 weeks and once you get it you should already be in CASS. When I was there I stayed at the Red Lion in downtown SLC and there were plenty of places to go if you don't mind lots of walking...or get with someone that has a car. My first check I received (About 2 weeks as well) was direct deposit. As far as BRO/JET they will put you in the plane they are currently trying fill. I didn't have a choice of skipping the BRO class for a jet class and not sure if they do this or give you the option? Sorry....can't help you out on the last question.....and good luck!

DON*T HATE ERAU 01-26-2008 08:22 PM

Do you receive per diem while in training. I know at Eagle that was a good chunk of our pay check since we got 16 hrs of per diem per day.

Kinda hoping we will stay away from the Lion next time we are in class again. You still planning on the transition or are you going to stay in PDX?

No per diem during training. Starts during IOE.

Geesh, we start paying during training, buying uniforms for ya'll and your Jepps....now you want per diem? Next, you'll want to get paid during IOE and that volunteer 28 days-following-IOE!

I have my bid in for a transition. I changed it to Denver though. :D

If you'll take ORD I'll trade ya'!

Reserve is insane out here right now. I haven't flown for almost 2 weeks!

How many lines do they have out there, where in the list do you bid? Do you commute from SEA? I was thinking of trying that...

DON*T HATE ERAU 01-26-2008 09:12 PM

You talking to me?

flyby 01-26-2008 09:13 PM

How long would it take a new FO to hold SLC.

doug_or 01-26-2008 10:25 PM

Right now they need Bro guys and are overstaffed on the jet. There are plenty of Bro guys that will come up on 1 year starting March, and plenty of them will probably bid over to the Jet, lowering the demand for new hire Jet guys. If you have a class date for the Brasilia I would take it unless you live in ORD or MKE. The pay is same for first years and you can bid the jet for second year if that what floats your boat. Hotels for the Brasilia have included the Comfort Suites near the Candlewood and Loftes, Redlion downtown, and Crystal inn downtown.

Yes, you'll go to $22, effective Jan 16, 2008, contingent upon pilot approval on Jan 30, 2008 at 8pm.

Then, on Jan 1, 2009, you'll go to.... $22 also, and on your anniversary date during the 2009 year (assuming a 2008 hire date), you'll go to second year pay of $35.35 (assuming CRJ).

Then Jan 1. 2010, you'll go to $35.70, then again on your anniversary, you'll go to $37.85, until we get a new pay agreement sometime in Dec 2010, or you get the UPS 747 job.

There's an exception to this, during your training your domicile is considered SLC, so no per diem... BUT if you're as lucky as I was, you can get sent to ATL for sim and you'll get 24 hour per diem the whole time your there. While I was there I got single occupancy room, and happy hour in the hotel each night after sim. I'm not sure if classes are big enough right now that they have to utilize the ATL sims, but here's hoping for the new guys.

For 700 training, I went to DFW. Some went to STL.

flyby 01-26-2008 10:46 PM

Tony, any idea how long it takes to told SLC?

For me... hire date, Feb 12, 2007, IOE @ SBA April, MKE May-June, FAT July, SLC August to present.

No plans to leave here unless we get an LAX base, or I upgrade.

flyby 01-26-2008 10:55 PM

Thanks, I wonder if Skywest sees the Saab as a equivalent to the CRJ.

Equivalent for what? They don't really care what you flew prior to here, UNLESS it was a CRJ, which affords lower minimums.

I like to call that the "Mesa Clause".

I don't think this statement is accurate, because the mins say specifically CRJ or equivalent. At the very least they are counting E145's and such. I suspect they'll give the same times to the DoJet guys at SkyWay as well.

flyby 01-26-2008 11:02 PM

I'm below 1000TT so I was referring to the mesa clause.

How far below?? Never hurts to apply.

I defer to you then. Then it goes to 850TT, with 200 hours in the jet, if I recall correctly.

BUT, I've been told of folks getting hired recently without the 1000TT, or the Mesa Clause. Talk to the recruiters at a SkyWest job fair near you ;)

reelbigchair 01-26-2008 11:07 PM

Hey Tony, I asked you this on another thread, but I don't think you saw it... totally unrelated to this, but why does SAPA/Management like BHO so much, over a much simpler straight rate?

reelbigchair 01-26-2008 11:11 PM

I mean besides the obvious they can avoid paying soft time at 700/900 rate.

TonyWilliams 01-26-2008 11:28 PM

SAPA doesn't like BHO. Brad Holt invented it, and he no longer work here (at least for the next 5 years).

I predict something different for 2010.

And before you ask it, we didn't want to overhaul the way pay is calculated for the interim, just increase the amount we actually get.

reelbigchair 01-26-2008 11:30 PM

Fair enough on the complete overhaul part.

out of curiosity.....how does skywest view lateral moves from another crj operator?

Rather favorably, I'd say.

158 lines. I'm 173/217. Was hoping for a line by March, but it doesn't look good.

I do commute from SEA. Aside from the long flight and a 2-hour time change, it's not terrible. Between Alaska, AA, and United there are lots of flight opportunities. Southwest makes a good backup plan if you don't mind a bit of a train ride from Midway. I like it because you can get around without a car pretty easily out here, if you don't mind riding the train/bus and walking a little.

WAVIT Inbound 01-27-2008 08:01 AM

FYI...we no longer use the red lion for the Bro guys.
