Newest Skywest Rumor

Disclaimer:This isn't meant to start any crap, get people riled up, or talk down to any pilot of any airline....

I heard from some sim instructors that apparently attend management meetings that Skywest may be buying Mesa as they approach bankruptcy. Rumor had it that the mesa pilots would be stapled to the skywest seniority group but would continue to be paid at their mesa seniority. They also said that this is the reason that the classes have been canceled as to make way for Mesa pilots. Anyone else hear this? Would it make sense to do? Wavit you hear anything like this floating around the training dept?

bender 02-11-2008 06:34 PM

If SkyWest were to purchase Mesa, I would imagine they would operate them seperately.

flyboyzz1 02-11-2008 06:37 PM

yeah that's what I thought but the rumor is that management was pretty specific that wasn't the case....granted it's all he said she said

tpersuit 02-11-2008 06:38 PM

I think Mesa is ALPA, so stapling their seniority at the bottom of the list won't happen anymore with the new law that just passed about airline mergers.

[quote=flyboyzz1;318753] Rumor had it that the mesa pilots would be stapled to the skywest seniority group but would continue to be paid at their mesa seniority. quote]

Why would SKW buy Mesa?
Why would mesa pilots keep their current pay?
Why not keep it all differnet like ASA and SKW?

Fly safe out there. So much fun in ORD today :)

flyboyzz1 02-11-2008 06:40 PM

would it matter if they were bankrupt?

Nope this is a new one for me.

paxhauler85 02-11-2008 07:05 PM

As a Mesa guy, this seems plausible at least from our end.

Since I've been here (nearly 2 years) I have heard that SKW would love to get their hands on our flying as it would give them a huge market share of UA flying, and another chunk of Delta.

God knows SKW has the $, our stock was down almost a quarter today, to $3 and change.

I just hope it wouldn't adversely affect those of us on the cusp of upgrade.

What I ride it could, and will be.

Flyboy8784 02-11-2008 07:16 PM

Geeze....the way things are going its a matter of time before we are all walking around with either Skywest ID's or Republic ID's....ya'll are like freakin locusts just swallowing everything up ;)

EngineOut 02-11-2008 07:19 PM

What a mess that would be: three different certificates, hunk of different airframes.

So the existing Mesa CAs would be CAs below the existing SKYW FOs?

But, hold on...wooo hooo, a Phoenix base!

OntheMissed 02-11-2008 07:20 PM

Whaa? Interesting.

Do we have to take all that ERJ crap to? Can we just have the CRJ stuff? ;)

flyboyzz1 02-11-2008 07:24 PM

well I think they would only take the CRJs... I heard that the mesa capts would still get their pay but be below FOs don't know how that would work. Isn't US airways flying up for grabs this year too which mesa has

Yeah, tell them to keep the 1900s and Dashes, too.

Getting CA pay and actually being a Captain are two completely different animals from my SKYW CRJ FO perspective.

flyboyzz1 02-11-2008 07:26 PM

I wonder what would happen with GO...or is that all shut down?

Isn't this only in case of a merger and not an acquisition?

Most of those Dashes are sitting parked down in CAE South Carolina...There has to be at least 15 of them there.

paxhauler85 02-11-2008 07:44 PM

We still operate 17 dashes throughout CO, WY, SD, AZ, CA and Mexico.

I can't imagine you guys giving the staple to the whole pilot group. Even the biggest skanks in the world wouldn't see the right in that.

The airways contract is not up until at least 2010-11.

If there's truth to this, I'm going to need to re-start looking for a new job.

Not that I do but couldn't I think the same thing about someone coming in and cutting into my seniority increasing my upgrade time?

I guess those Southwest guys are a bunch of $%&@ for what they did to Morris? They stapled the Morris guys but kept there pay. That was alot better than showing them the street or just stapling without keeping their pay. Anyways..........

Its the case if seniority lists are integrated. It doesn't matter if the company merges or acquires another.

This would never happen with the new Allegheny Mohawk law signed this past December. As far as cutting into seniority and increasing upgrade time, it should be "fair and equitable." What is fair and equitable? That is between Mesa pilots, since they have a voice because they are represented by a union that is recognized by the NMB, and Skywest management to decide.

flyboyzz1 02-11-2008 08:02 PM

yeah I mean if mesa is that close to bankruptcy many might like the idea of a continued job with the same pay.

It's kind of funny. Is there any other industry where one company completely buys out another and is FORCED to hire all the previous companies employees? I am not saying this is or isn't a good thing it's just interesting to think about. Don't companies acquire other companies at times just to take their business and shut the acquired company down? I would in no way want to see this happen to any Mesa pilots or any pilot for that matter I am just curious how it works.

Koolaidman 02-11-2008 08:09 PM

Could this be why Johnny Boy just bought a bunch of stock?

They are not forced to hire all the pilots. If they wanted to buy Mesa and only keep the CRJ, for example, they would not need all of Mesa's pilots. The merged seniority lists, if they do merge them, would decide who is junior and get furloughed. Whats the difference to the company which pilots are furloughed? I mean really. To the company, a pilot is a pilot is a pilot. And in this hypothetical, the acquiring company would be a party in the decision of what is "fair and equitable" anyways.

Koolaidman 02-11-2008 08:10 PM

How did this rumor start? Was the person who started this currently in the sim or do they know someone who is in training?

It depends on the purpose of the acquisition. If the acquisition was to eliminate a competitor and increase market share, a lot of times the assets and personnel of the acquired company will remain (with the exception of redundant positions or overlaps) in order to handle the increased business. Why fire people that already know the ins and outs of the job, the client base, and the legal/regulatory environment for no other reason than that they were part of the acquired just so you can rehire, retrain and relearn a bunch of new employees? So while the company that was acquired may seem to "cease to exist" in reality the assets and people frequently are still there doing the same jobs but with a different name on their paychecks.

Now if the purpose of the acquisition was to break up and sell off parts of a company then thats a different story and is usually more painful for the employees involved and typically results in significant loss of jobs and shedding of assets all in the name of short-term gains for the shareholders of the acquiring company.

As far as being "forced" to take on the work force of the acquired company, I don't know for sure of any other industry that is "forced" to take on those employees. If the airline industry is truly "forced" to take on those employees through state or federal law, then I can only imagine it has to do with the necessary role air transportation plays in the national economy and transportation infrastructure. Its the same reason we can't strike at the drop of a hat. But when you think about it, forced or not, its in the acquiring company's best interest to take on those existing employees at the acquired company because the alternative is a lot of airplanes and gate space sitting idle and vacant until you can hire and train new employees. That, my friend is an expensive proposition and does little to benefit anyone.

flyboyzz1 02-11-2008 08:27 PM

I am in sim and talked to a few senior (yeah i know that means nothing) sim guys

Koolaidman 02-11-2008 08:30 PM

New hire, upgrade, pc?

When I transitioned back in August, they were telling the upgrades that they would be holding a line in February or March...

It doesn't seem as if anyone seems to know anything over there!!! But they do start some great, and I mean great, rumors!

flyboyzz1 02-11-2008 08:33 PM

yeah newhire coming from the regional with probably the longest upgrade...I know this is probably nothing more than a rumor just thought I would share it and see what everyone thought...

Koolaidman 02-11-2008 08:36 PM

Horizon? Eagle?

The way it sounds, we are going to have long upgrades now! I'd better go to RAH for the quick upgrade, get my 1000 PIC and get hired by Southwest. It is that easy! Just ask anyone!

Nevets 02-11-2008 08:37 PM

So I've read about rumors of Skywest buying ExpressJet, Comair, Eagle, and now Mesa. So lets just get it over with and start one in which skywest buys Republic Holdings.:p

flyboyzz1 02-11-2008 08:38 PM

I'll ask tomorrow and see what I can find out :)

*if* Mesa goes bankrupt, its stock will be worth zero. If they come out of bankruptcy, they'll reissue their stock. but still the old stock would be worthless.

it doesn't always happen that way. sometimes, after a bankruptcy organization, the original stock still stands or is swapped out for new stock at some rate. so it's not always worthless. that being said, it's not a great personal plan to buy stock and then declare bankruptcy for your company. wouldn't make a whole lot of sense.

buying stock in anticipation of having your company bought by someone else makes much more sense, financially.

slavetotheman 02-12-2008 08:09 AM

Wouldn't that be considered insider trading...which of course JO is very familiar.

nicholasblonde 02-12-2008 09:26 AM

That would be one heck of a turnaround--you start indoc at Mesa, and three days after your checkride you hear the news--now you're a Skywest FO with your 250 hours TT...that would be one lucky scenario for some kid!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
