Are you trying to be stealthy so people don't know you're a pilot? A uniform in pieces looks even worse. If people stare because I'm a pilot in my uniform, they can kiss my arse...do people give cops crap for eating in uniform? Why would I want to waste 10 minutes of crew rest running up to the hotel room to change when I'm already starving after 5 legs with no food? Go ahead and take your epaulets and tie and whatever off so you end up in a plain white short-sleeved collared shirt and plain black/navy pants...people will think you're Mormons coming back from a mission.

You hit the nail on the head. Tell some airman in Iraq, Iran, Afghanistan, Germany, or even the USA that he's not paid like a professional and should look like crap. (You know, the ones being sent off to war for $1300 a month, and looking like they just walked out of a military uniform shop). They'll tell you it's all about PRIDE, PROFESSIONALISM and self worth. If you want to look like crap, go ahead, but don't expect to get much respect. You've apparently not earned it.
BTW, I've seen pilots being interviewed at CAL who were shot down because they'd been seen walking around looking like crap in their "other" company uniform. CAL didn't want to continue promoting their "look". But hey, if you're paid slob wages, then please dress like one, and see where it gets you.

Coming from the military the uniform standards and enforcement in the airlines is a joke. Try preparing your uniform for an hour or so everytime you wear it. Iron your pants and shirt, starch your collar and keep the shoes at least clean if you are not going to shine them. If you want to go above and beyond cut all of those little loose threads off your shirts. That is a bare minimum and takes no more than 10 minutes or so.
Epaullets are idiot proof, the seam on the bottom..you do not want to see that, the wide part goes towards your shoulder and the skinny part goes towards your neck.

I think that's one of the problems with the new generation of professional pilots.
A majority of them never served a day in the military, or wore a standardized uniform before.
You can always tell your fellow military members who are pilots just by looking at their uniforms.

I've flown w/ several guys who I refer to as looking "very military and professional" normally they're clean cut, in decent shape, and wear their uniform well. On the contrary, i've seen a lot of ex-military pilots who, for whatever reason, have strayed a little far away from their previous standards, then i've seen the others who make me want to hit the wall in the presence.

With the exception of the occasional six year old, very few people are in awe of what we do. But then, to borrow from another, I'm not carrying a load of life-saving anything anywhere, I'm mostly getting ****ed off people safely to Newark.
Whoda thunk flying a load of rudder dog out of Hong Kong would be the ideal job just ten short years after the movie?

Trying to make the company issued/approved uniforms look good is liking winning the special olympics...
Try buying a nice pair of pants at Nordstroms in your company's colors.
BTW how many guys who are boasting about shining their shoes and ironing their shirts are wearing clip on ties? If you think people can't tell, you're wrong.
