My biggest complaint about people and uniforms are shoes and Shirts.
Please buy a fitted shirt that actually fits. Next Please buy yourselves a nice pair of shoes no Sketchers with 2in rubber soles that have work-boot tread. My first Professional flying job I alwas made sure I looked like a professipnal the captain I flew with on the other hand always wore these HiTech comat boots and it absolutly drove me crazy, besides the worn out dickies pants, the guy looked absolutley pitiful. You guys are Professionals dress like it.

We can't dress like professionals because we are not paid like professionals.

I agree, I see pilots wearing the "skechers" type shoes/boots with a 2in rugged sole built for mountain hiking you're talking about.

EvilGN 02-28-2008 09:48 AM

Being a military guy, the backpack in uniform will always look unprofessional to me, our Service Dress Blues (navy) is almost identical to the airline pilot suit and ew would look absolutely rediculous if we wore a backpack in that uniform. Only recently did the navy begin allowing backpacks for students in uniform, and there are rules governing style and how its to be worn.

WHAT! Im only a prop trash driver but I still crease/iron my shirts and pants before showing up to work. You still have an image to uphold regardless!

Oh, wow, very cute...but I like the Dora one better :p
Backpacks arent the best but one has to make due with what you got. I put my overnight bag in the belly of the plane but I want my lunch or other ends and odd things with me up front. After putting all my Jepps and other things in my flight bag I just dont have room to stuff in personal things. Now, once everyone goes to a paperless cockpit and the flightbag contents chages then I can see ditching the backpack. I agree, I dont think we look as professional but I do think that it is justified to carry.

You hit the nail on the head. Tell some airman in Iraq, Iran, Afghanistan, Germany, or even the USA that he's not paid like a professional and should look like crap. (You know, the ones being sent off to war for $1300 a month, and looking like they just walked out of a military uniform shop). They'll tell you it's all about PRIDE, PROFESSIONALISM and self worth. If you want to look like crap, go ahead, but don't expect to get much respect. You've apparently not earned it.:rolleyes:

BTW, I've seen pilots being interviewed at CAL who were shot down because they'd been seen walking around looking like crap in their "other" company uniform. CAL didn't want to continue promoting their "look". But hey, if you're paid slob wages, then please dress like one, and see where it gets you.

As this is a public forum, I won't go into FFDO specifics, but no "backpack" has ever been required, especially now,...... nuff said. And yes a backpack looks very unprofessional. Also, there is some unwritten IPOD etiquette. Listening seated at the gate for a long wait is one thing. Walking down or up the jet-way, earbuds installed, trying in vain to sing along with Britney is something else entirely. It screams "my responsibilities are not important, or not important to me." Either way, it's not the image we should be projecting. Before you ask, yes, I am the arbiter of such things.:D

Well aren't you giving us a good name....thats a horrible way to think about it. Let me ask you this, when you get each raise/upgrade/better job/ are you going to care more then? You certainly don't come off sounding like a professional pilot who cares about his own personal appearance.

As to the uniform. Why not the canary pant suit hillary sports??

Great attitude!!! You'll certainly go far in this industry. BE-99's may be as far as you ever get though. If I was your boss and saw you looking like crap I'd think you certainly didn't deserve to be paid more since people who make less take more pride in THEMSELVES .......... Wow have you go a lot to learn................

If you want to get PAID like a professional, you should LOOK and ACT like a professional.

CloudPilot57 02-28-2008 01:33 PM

And for pete's sake, take your uniform off in public. I went to a restaurant and saw two pilots wearing epaulets and their crew badges while they were sitting down and eating. This place was no where near an airport too. C'mon, you are not on that tight of a schedule to at least take your epaulets and badge off.

tsween 02-28-2008 01:34 PM

while we are on the subject of uniforms, i would like to ask people what they think of the sweaters with epaulets on them. i know many companies allow them but what is your opinion?

Are you trying to be stealthy so people don't know you're a pilot? A uniform in pieces looks even worse. If people stare because I'm a pilot in my uniform, they can kiss my arse...do people give cops crap for eating in uniform? Why would I want to waste 10 minutes of crew rest running up to the hotel room to change when I'm already starving after 5 legs with no food? Go ahead and take your epaulets and tie and whatever off so you end up in a plain white short-sleeved collared shirt and plain black/navy pants...people will think you're Mormons coming back from a mission.

tsween 02-28-2008 03:39 PM

cops eat on short breaks or while on duty, that would be the the same as a pilot eating in the airport

i would rather waste 10 minutes changing than be that guy

Being seen in uniform is "that guy?"...usually its "that crew." It does look weird for a guy to eat by himself in uniform off-airport but I've had several meals a block or two from the hotel with the whole crew in uniform (mainly because you usually get to the hotel 15 minutes before said restaurant closes)... I can change and not eat (and pay $20 for room service) or run over and eat. If you're that embarassed to wear a uniform you're in the wrong line of work...and will continue to get strange looks from those of us who've flown military for months at a time without seeing a day out of uniform.

tsween 02-28-2008 04:08 PM

"that guy" refers to the guy who wears it everywhere and looks around to make sure people notice him

i understand that you not always have time to get changed before eating, and therefore does not make you "that guy"

i am by no means embarassed to wear the uniform, but i also do not wear it when it is not required of me

I'm a flight instructor who wears a pilot uniform (my flight school requires the instructors to wear the uniform). I go to many public places in my uniform on my way to and from work. People ask me all kinds of funny questions: "Are you a cop?" or the best one I've gotten is "Are you a boat captain?". That question always makes me feel like I'm Gopher or Captain Stubing or something. I think to myself, "I'm not wearing shorts for crying out loud." It's a riot. But I'm not embarrassed.

My Uniform Makes Me Important..

I use my uniform to jump to the front of the line at:

Security checkpoints
Boarding
Restaurants
Urinals

Me too. Sometimes I have to push someone out of the way, which gets awkward and messy, but my three stripes say "this guy's not going to wait."

Which management team do you work for? I wish it were that simple. By the way toilet duck has a "hello kitty" backpack and i think it worked out okay for him at republic.

I just love it when someone comes up and asks for directions at the airport...I'm usually just as lost as they are! I have also had people come up to me in the lobby of the hotel and ask me to get their bags!

Haha. Thats great =)

I always feel bad when I'm at an airport I don't know, and passengers come up asking where so and so terminal or gate is. I usually just have to look up and theres a big sign with where to go, but I try to help out. I imagine for passengers that rarely go to an airport, it could be a bit over-whelming.

I had a kid walk up and use the bubbler (water fountain for you guys outside of WI) next to me and say "Hello Officer" to me. I was wearing my full ramp uniform: orange vest, dirty blue fall jacket, blue pants, brown steel toed boots, a knit hat and my ear protection.

:confused:they shouldnt. LDS missionaries dont dress like that, they are much more PROFESSIONAL(;)) looking in full black suits then a stripped down uniform and more clean cut then many of todays "younger" pilots. Nice try but completly inaccurate.

Hmmmmm, then are there fake missionaries going around? The last set I saw, yesterday, were not wearing the suit jacket. It was also around 85 F.
