Regional VS Corporate
#21
BoilerUp and I both had regional airline experience before we transitioned to corporate. In addition to networking, some 91/135 jobs are simply right place at the right time.
Late last year I moved the family to IL to join a great corporate department. It was pretty much a right place/right time/right circumstance job that I got through networking while working for a subsidiary company. That company was recently sold... essentially everything lined up just right over the course of five years to allow me to position myself to get the job when it opened up... and even then the first time around had some hurdles.
The biggest piece of advice that I can offer is continue to network, but also set goals that allow you to continue movement towards your dream job. That might mean taking particular courses or joining certain organizations. It might mean networking on your days off or taking extra effort to meet people online (and offline) at various events like NBAA or the Bombardier Safety Standdown.
One of the biggest reasons that I see careers stagnate (both in 121 and corporate/charter) is because people get "comfortable" and don't continue to seek personal growth. It's a given that with this job you are going to have to make some sacrifices to continue to advance. That might mean short cuts in pay, moving the family, poor schedules, etc.
