Default What is a "Reduction Bid"

I've been flying 121 for a little over a year and this is something I keep hearing and don't exactly know what it means. Does a reduction bid have anything to do with upgrades or F.O's moving from one airframe to another and displacing more junior F.O? Thanks for any input in advance.

I would guess that a reduction bid is similar to a "displacement" bid or a "realignment" bid. Different carriers call them different things.

Essentially it's a system wide bid that is triggered by either a reduction of flying, furlough, or retirement of a fleet type.

In general (but not always) these types of bids don't include upgrades, but instead, downgrades and seat shifts from one aircraft to (typically) a smaller one. Last man standing ends up with a furlough letter.

It means bad news for newhires and recent upgrades. Who is putting one of them out?

No, we are not putting one out. We are dumping our Dash 200 and replacing them with Q400. I was asking one of our capt.'s what airframe the 200 F.Os would go to (400 or CRJ) and I thought I remember hearing him say "reduction bid" Though # of airframes will stay the same so no one shoud get the boot though I am guessing some of the senior Dash 200 pilots may pick the RJ and displace more junior FOs to the Q400. Is that a possibility?

There is a Pilot Reduction Bid on the DDS website, but its just like a standing bid. It shows what plane and base is your 1st, 2nd, 3rd... choice. How I understand it, they will get their highest choice that they have the seniority to hold.

I don't really know how all that is going to work with training costs (bumping a CRJ pilot to the Q400, and having to train two pilots for one spot), and the majority of pilots that haven't submitted a reduction bid, but you can see the bid on the website. Maybe you can make more of it than I can.

Reduction bid is like a standing bid but doesn't normaly mean progression rather regression
