Can anyone say Discovery Air? Or how about this one, can you say Mahalo Air? They couldn't make it flying ATR-42s.

Mesa has unlimited cash and access to airplanes, so they can try as hard or as little as they want to make it work, or bail out anytime they want to. They may not expect immediate profits, they may look at it like a longer-term program.

I just feel sorry for the Mesa guys who have to fly there. Good luck finding a decent place to live. I was based there as a new hire with NWA. During my probationary period, my paycheck did'nt even cover the rent! Wife worked (self employeed) and her income and our savings covered everything else. Finally able to buy there with the help of a jumbo loan. We were there from '97 - '02. We went back there in Jan to visit friends and the price of housing is unbelievable! Sold our house in '02 for $490,000 (no we didnt make that much). Now, the average home is over $900,000 in the old neighborhood. I'm not talking bout 3,000 sf on the beach, I'm taking cinder block construction, 1400 - 1800 sf in Kailua. Could'nt even think of going back if NWA reopened a base there.

I belive the average price of a "home" on Oahu now is around $400,000 - $500,000. That will get ya about 1200 sf. Be nice to your neighbors, cause they will be about 20 -30 ft from ya. Don't believe me, checkout

I disagree, and I don't think the Mesa board would approve an open ended financial "fishing trip". History will tell, but everything I know about the Island market says this thing is going to be a street fight for intra-island market share.

As for unlimited resources, I'd suggest it's anything but that:

Default Interesting topic...

I was talking to a Mesa payroll person a few weeks ago, and asked about the cost of living in Hawaii and Mesa wages. I asked her if there was a cost of living adjustment in the works, and she claimed that the accounting people understand some sort of adjustment needs to be made- that or people may get off a plane and see their pilot on the corner with a tin cup in his hand. Whether or not that materializes remains to be seen.

As for the success of the operation, I suspect J.O. has done his homework. Like him or not, he's certainly not an idiot.

Unlimited is a relative term. They have about 300 Million of available liquid assets. That is a lot for a regional airline without a huge parent company (like AMR). Mesa's board will let JO do as he please until he f*cks up.

Initial cadre heads out on the 4th of june...all currently qualified on the CRJ.
It was a mix of jr/sr...some bases like OGG went very senior for captains 7+ years, and some bases (LIH) were very junior...2 or 3 years seniority for Ca's.
I am held back b\c I am on the ERJ...see you in KOA later this year....
