I just got this memo from our company:
The last several months Colgan Air has had great difficulty filling vacancies in the Beech, especially the captain position. Due to the enormous amount of transition and upgrade training for the Q400 and Saab, Beech vacancies have been numerous. Add to this the lack of interest from within Colgan to upgrade into the Beech. This left us no options but to hire captains outside. This is always our last option. Colgan Air will always give our pilots the first opportunity when qualifications are met.
Our next challenge, we had very little interest attempting to recruit Beech captains from outside. We currently have four Beech captains scheduled for Q400 transition class in May. The dilemma, how can we attract enough outside Beech captains to allow our four captains to start Q400 class? We looked at all options and the best solution was to increase pay for Beech captains. Therefore effective June 1, 2008 our Beech captain pay will be aligned with Saab captain pay. Our fine recruiting department has reported that we should now meet our goal and have new Beech captains in place so we do not delay our Beech captains from transitioning to the Q400.
Thank you very much for all you do for Colgan Air…….
Amazing how they saved the simplest option as a last option and wouldn't you know, they may actually get people now.

I am cynical whenever mgmt gives money away on their own without being forced by threat of strike or strike. Why the raise? I think this is an attempt to make another portion of the pilot group (Beech pilots) happy when we are coming up on union drive time. I do not know when the "status quo" period starts but this may be a sneaky way around it.
