Need advice

I am currently a Mesa DHC8 FO. I interviewed at Mesa and SKW. Both hired me. SKW placed me in a hiring pool for the E120 and contacted me with a class date while I was at Mesa ground school. I thought carefully over a weekend and then contacted SKW to thankfully decline their offer. I gave them more than a month's time to fill the slot I chose to leave vacant.
I chose Mesa for a variety of reasons that I won't go into now, but am happy to discuss another time.
My question to all of you is this; Who really gets screwed if a pilot takes up a slot at Mesa for whatever reason, with the intent of leaving to SKW (or one of the other "good regionals") when they call with a class date?
JO and the rest of Mesa management? Somewhat, they lose the cost of ground training for a period of time and they lose time recruiting another pilot. Sadly, pilots are becoming easier to find in the current state of our industry.
I think the real loser is the pilot that would have taken the Mesa slot if the potential SKW guy or gal had not blocked them from doing so. This pilot could have begun his or her flying career a few months earlier and started the seniority clock just a little sooner.
Sometimes when pilots think that they are getting even with "the Man", what they are doing most is screwing a fellow pilot.

Pure flamebait but I'll bite on it.
I think while your intentions were honorable, I think you lacked enough understanding of JO and his cronies. I was at Mesa for nearly ten years. (LAMA BABY YEAH!) If it had been me, I would have probably bailed to Skywest. Good luck with your decision and the ride......I've enjoyed the flamebait. Thanks...a little bit of charcoal...but it was tasty.

Commuting hotel stays are not paid for, neither are crashpads.
Your side job opportunity depends on the company, airplane, and base. If you end up on reserve for an extended period it will be hard to have a side gig. If you end up a line holder in a junior base where you can control your schedule and get a lot of days off, then you might be able to swing it.
Unless you are retiring from the military, consider staying in the reserves...you can probably work as much as you want to and the airline has to let you off. It's rare to be given a hard time over reserve duty from an airline. However...there are plenty of IA opportunities right now your reservists. If you stay in long enough it will probably get around to you.

Reserves- definately a consideration just because I dont want to throw away 10yrs toward a retirement..even though that retirement doesnt start coming until age 60. It is very hard for me, a finance major, to get out of one of the few organizations that still offer a retirement for 20yrs of employment.
Really dont want to do the IA thing. That is one of the reasons for me getting out- just got married, kids down the road...dont want to leave them for deployments. I do, however, understand the ailine pilot life- away from home for a few days, then at home, then away....but no long stretches such as 6 months. I can handle that and so can she.
