Default Skyway to furlough

Skyway Airlines to lay off up to 100 pilots

Up to 100 Skyway Airlines pilots will be furloughed after Delta Air Lines Inc. announced it was hiring a rival carrier for its regional jet service.

Delta said Freedom Airlines, a subsidiary of Mesa Air Group Inc., will become a carrier for Delta Connection, Delta's regional service. Freedom will take over Delta Connection flights previously handled by Atlantic Coast Airlines.

Skyway Airlines Inc., the regional service operated by Oak Creek-based Midwest Air Group Inc., had hoped to pick up Delta Connection flights from Cincinnati, a move that would have more than doubled Skyway's operations.

Carol Skornicka, Midwest Air senior vice president, said Midwest executives had known for some time that the deal might fall through.

Skornicka said 80 to 100 pilots who had been hired in anticipation of the Delta contract will be placed on furlough. The pilots live throughout the country but fly out of Milwaukee.

Skornicka said Delta had agreed to cover Midwest's costs of training the employees.

But Delta went with Freedom Airlines, which will use 50-seat Bombardier regional jets, instead of the 32-seat Fairchild Dornier regional jets operated for Delta by Atlantic Coast Airlines. Skyway also uses Fairchild jets.

Delta said the agreement with Freedom Airlines provides long-term cost savings and efficiencies. Delta Connection President J.T. Fisher said in a statement that the Bombardier jets provide more flexibility and effectiveness than the smaller Fairchild jets.

The negotiations between Delta and Skyway were first reported a year ago.

Skyway reported passenger revenue of $75 million in 2004, compared with Midwest Airlines passenger revenue of $279.2 million.

Mesa Air Group is single handedly killing every change regional pilots have of a decent living. I've often wondered when their "killing machine" will come to a screeching halt.

That's a real bummer. Hope something works out for the furloughees.

If you're looking to jump ship, Mesaba is hiring 150ish through the end of the year. We're getting 15 CRJs (first one scheduled for September) with options on 20 (most likely to be confirmed). Bases in MSP, DTW, CVG and MEM. We have a good commuter clause if u don't want to relocate. Solid, well rounded contract. You are paid starting first day of groundschool, 75 hr guarantee, u get a badge within a couple of days, full health bennies, hotels paid for. Apply via www.mesaba.com

Good luck Skyway folks

Thanks for the info. Resume has already been sent. It's unfortunate the situation has reached this point because Skyway is a good company with a good group of people working there.

Hopefully, some Skyway folks will be fortunate to get hired at Mesaba which sounds like as good as a company.

Peace

SF

Sorry to hear that for the skyway guys.

If any of them are interested, ASA is hiring over 200 this year and bases ATL and SLC. Same thing as mesaba, get your guarantee/per diem starting day one of training as well as put up in a hotel throughout training. www.flyasa.com has all the info.

If the attrition keeps up, maybe they won't have to furlough that many. My F/O friend there said they got 20 resignations alone this past week! Guess they ARE finding places to go already...
