Default A word on Uniform appearance

I consider myself to be a nice guy, my jumpseat is open to everyone-I'll even leave the light on for you, but what is with this new generation of First Officers?

The sloppy-malnourished types....since when did uniform appearance / standards disappear? Lately I've been getting the un-ironed shirt types and really, if you wanna talk about putting down the profession heres a big part of that...if you wanna look like a nerd, hey thats on you, but when you are in a position where people are depending on you to take care of them first impressions are everything.I don the all black, with collar clips-may not look like much of a pilot to the general public but at least I work it.So a couple of tips:

1)Don't leave the house with a wrinkled shirt hoping that it will smoothen itself out.- It won't no matter how many stretches you do , or how long you stand under the pack outlets...it just won't work.

2)If you're on the skinny side, don't have the belt so damn tight around your waist! It makes your shirt look oversized and it makes you look like starvin marvin with a job-and the girl's don't find it attractive. You may only make 19 an hour but thats no excuse for not eating,we've all been there

3)When you're standing at the gate waiting for info don't slouch, reg F/O's these days are really tall for some reason, so try to stand up with a straight back...

I post this in the reg forum because there is still hope for you guys, the major leaguers should know it by now.good day im off to Vegas!

Oh man, ditto on all of those. I'm a skinny guy myself, while I'm not an airline pilot, I wear FITTED clothing. I find a lot of people don't take any pride in their appearance by dressing sloppy. I've seen way too many "next gen FOs" at the airport with shirts half-tucked, unironed, baggy dress pants.

I didn't realize HOW BAD it had gotten until the last few trips I took this summer. I'm seeing too many of those you mention. I've seen older skinnier captains/FOs who still manage to look well because they take care of their shoes, tie their ties properly, iron their uniforms, and MOST OF ALL...wear fitted clothing.

I definitely agree that a professional appearance is extremely important. But, I sometimes feel that if they want me to dress like a professional, then they should pay me like a professional.

What the heck is a "unifrom"?

It pays to be professional when admonishing others.

If these forums existed 20 years ago you would read the same comment. I think it is pilot tradition to think all the new FOs look like slobs. I actually think the opposite. The last time I J/S the young guys looked sharp and the old guys needed to learn how to plug in an iron.

"next generation FO's" hhahah give me a break.....

i can honestly say i see more sloppy "OLD GENERATION CA's" who look like they have had the same faded black pants and yellow shirt since there were a new hire!

Alot of you Capts are overweight so please:

1. Get clothes that fit so it doesnt look like you are borrowing your new born son's shirt

2. People are depending on you and first impressions are everything....so please take the time to wear shoes that dont look like you just mowed the lawn

3. need i keep goin?

I guess you could consider me a "next gen FO" but would argue that we fo's look more presentable then the "old gen CA's"
