Now days the procedures take the captain out of the loop if the JS is in the back. In reality we do not even care if you are back there you are no asset to us up front. Funny part is all these old farts that think checking in is a courtesy really just cause a distraction and slow down what we are doing.
Want to check in with somebody - make the Gate Agent or the Flight Attendant fell special.
Best you all just grab a seat and enjoy the ride.
Typical response: Blah, Blah.....back in the day we hand propped DC-3's.......

1. No asset to us up front? What world do you live in? Why don't you remember back to the UAL DC10 that crashed in Sioux City Iowa. They had a guy come up and help. You never, NEVER know when you might need the help. Don't shun it.
2. They cause a distraction by checking in. GET A LIFE! I'll tell you, it's nice to know who's in the back. ABP's, a helping hand if something goes wrong and certainly added security. I feel better knowing that a JSer checked in with me so that if the FA has some kind of emergency she's not alone back there.
3. Now days the procedures take the CA out of the loop? That's laziness and how do you know it's a ligitiamte JS? People can and have gotten by the gate agents with BS.
4. It's about courtesy and respect. Obviously two qualities you don't possess.

In all fairness, I did not peek a look at the manifest. He ::may:: have been on a pass (didn't make sense to still be in uniform, it's not like he could have partaken in the complimentary first-class adult beverages)...But I fly that route frequently and have never seen any one of 'em on a pass. In fact, they can usually be seen up in the gate area at 79 duking it out for who gets the ride home and who has to two-leg it on Horizon out of SJC!
Just a thought, but certinaly not arguing with ya.

Ok....I work the ramp/gate at BNA for eagle and I was talking to a CA the other day who said he thinks all nonrevs should check in if they are employees (not spouses or friends). I'm not sure how much help a ramper would be unless somebody needed help destroying their carry-on, but if I ever see this CA on a flight I'm on I guess I would check in with him.
