Pinnacle's on time performance

Pinnacle led the industry in on time arrivals in July. You guys want a new contract, right?

While I agree with what you're hinting at, this isn't breaking news and has been discussed here in several other threads.

Yes. Makes it hard to screw the times to make us late.

Past V1 09-09-2008 09:42 AM

Also with are block times insanely over blocked...it makes it nearly impossible to be late...you would have to have a serious mx issue or a very bad ground crew to be late. Just wait for the winter to roll around things will be back to normal.

Not entirely. Quit closin the door till all checklists are done. FA complience checks done thoroughly and completely prior to door closure. Brake doesn't drop till CA is ready

Ummmmm....we are talking about on time Arrivals...not on time departures...even if we are late departing...we are so over blocked that we will still be on time...again Arrivals

Maybe I'm missing something here (3 hours sleep) but 20-30 minutes isn't enough time to run a 12 item before start checklist? or maybe a FD inspection check too? Have fun explaining that to the CP when he recommends you for a PC or to the NMB saying the pilots aren't playing fair.

p.s. since I know people will misread/misinterpret this, no I am not advocating our stellar on time performance. But sometimes management finally gets scared, the stars all align just right, and the ramp/gate is finally fully staffed making it really tough, absent a MTX issue, to justify a late departure. Even though this thread is about arrivals :)

Be one minute late on Block Out, no checklist until the doors closed and the brake has been dropped, taxi slow, don't accept immediates, no short cuts and fly 250/M.70 or slower. Also, hold off calling MX control on small issues so that it makes you late blocking out or wait until you’re blocked out so that you can eat into your on time arrival and get paid for it (this actually gives you a good excuse when and if the CP calls wondering why you where late).

I'm not advising it but it can be done and it works in your favor if you get Block or Better.

HercDriver130 09-09-2008 10:48 AM

In 3 1/2 years flying 121.... here is how I see it..... The crew should be ready to push when the door closes....taxi normally, no need to use the SWA method just normally... be ready to go when its your turn number one at the end...fly the flight planned route, fly the planned cruise speed, call mx control when its appropriate. Then let the chips all where they may.....IF your block times have been adjusted to be very hard to over block then hell, just get there. My thing is fly by the contract no more ...no less.

Agree. But there's a lot of "pinnaclers" including a bunch here in this forum that will never tell the truth. These individuals would taxi as if the devil would be chasing them. 30 minute turns at outstations sometimes turn into 15. Why rush everything?, if you are late and your turn takes 30 min, well take the 30 mins. Why rush? (unless last leg off course). Start writting stuff up. Don't wait till you go back to the hub. No more favors. Don't ever leave without comissary or lav service. If they are slow, well.....they are slow not your problem, it's even a different department than yours (Ground Ops). If there's no gate agent, or they haven't finished unloading the valet checked bags at outstations, don't open the door. Sometimes they push you to open the door, so you block in, and then take forever to unload the valet checked bags and attach the jetbridge. That ain't right. Also, very important, don't push without numbers, period. Once you have numbers, you can push. Once you push complete after start and taxi checklist before taxi (I think that's about to change with the new checklist). Remember, if your FO is busy he/she won't be much of a help taxing, think about runway incursions, etc.....
Also, 300 lbs of contingency???? That's b.s. less than 500 shouldn't be acceptable. Get more fuel please....
Having said that, if it's the last leg or you are trying to catch you commute or something, well obviously go for it. This is the way the pilot group should be thinking now: ME, ME, ME, ME and only ME.

We don't have a CP, just a puppet on strings.

We really don't have a CP. In the new FOM revision you can look up the admin and where a CP should be we have the "Director of Flying" that I am not even sure is a line flying pilot (on the ALPA sen list).

Simply the Best

I nearly missed my commute home because the plane in front of us was taxiing slow. Taxi slow when able, but be mindful of those behind you.

keep thinking like this and it may never get resolved. If you're going to really commit to getting it done, it can't matter if its your first leg of a 4 day or the last leg and you're running close on making your commute. And don't think that DL, AA, UA, ASA, etc. etc. will give a damn about who is behind them when its their turn at the table.

Along with the on time arrival/departure times going down, you'd be surprised what pressure calls from other airlines and ATC managers will do to get your management team moving.....What the hell do we care if you taxi slow? we all get paid by the minute.

oh yeah... that would require people thinking about something/somone other than themselves....what was I thinking about?....never happen at some airlines

I know that when we were doing our "safety program" at ASA, We tried to taxi as slow as possible, but never with somebody behind us, if we could help it. I know that it is not always possible to do, but we tried.

Making my commute takes first priority over everything else going on at the time, within the margin of safety or course. Getting out of the gate 10 early is usually the best way. Again, making my commute is number 1. If I'm not trying to get home to my family, then I'm all for the "safety program."

heard Flagship tell center that they were slowing down to save gas today on the way to Omaha... don't understand what keeps you motivated.

Pinnacle Corp. doesn't pay for the gas, NWA does. Saving gas doesn't really help the company.

Pretty sure it does help the company. I'd bet NWA keeps track of fuel one way or another. Again, where does this motivation come from?

Slowing down = Late. LATE = BAD = Good for contract. Even Ron Mexico understands that! And he got a bad case of VD. NU

two statements that will add time to the length of negotiations. The second one is especially damaging but not unexpected from the "me" generation.

Look, I'm don't want to come across as an ass. I really don't mean it that way. It's just that at some point we have to make a choice do do what HAS to be done. No matter who it affects in the short term (including ourselves and our families). Either that or continue to watch management drag their feet and the union stand behind unreasonable demands. And nooooo. most of the demands are not unreasonable BUT some are and everyone knows it.

Funny how you think you know me...

I understand everything you are saying, and agree for the most part. I'm just saying that my days off and my family come first. I leave my work at work. I'm not going to short myself precious time at home if I can help it. Work to live, not live to work.
Are you a commuter?

ohplease! 09-18-2008 08:20 AM

not anymore. takes too much time from the family....yet another choice.

lol, and after 3 posts in this pinnacle thread all know your type....

higney85 09-18-2008 10:07 AM

I don't know everyone else but I come to work, do my job to the best of my ability, and come home. I fly what the book/flight plan call for and play it safe. I figure we could fly at 250 and save gas and maybe be late or be professionals and fly by the book. To each their own.

Like I've said before...we are so overfueled and overblocked, and we operate out of airports that are pretty efficient compared to the national avg (MSP & DTW de-icing ops and traffic flow is good compared to JFK/ATL/etc. and MEM is super compared to most hubs of that size nationwide)...it is essentially impossible to show up late barring unforseen mx or wx issues. 250 won't cut it unless it's an extremely long flight (although the extremely long flights are even more overblocked it seems).

One thing I do think is somewhat sadistic is that sickness crap in the last flt ops memo...I can understand a "wellness program" in the corporate sense (i.e. a genuinely good-hearted attempt to lower your company's health costs, provide reduced-rate gym memberships, encourage preventative healthcare, etc.)....but that wellness stuff at 9E is such a thinly veiled propaganda campaign against "being sick" that I can't believe they don't get some sort of slap on the hand from the FAA for that program...a genuine wellness program would give us reduced rate gym memberships and pamphlets on quitting smoking, preventative healthcare tips (what ages are recommended for heart function tests, breast exams, etc.)...9E instead is basically saying "if you don't call in sick you win a free camera." It makes me sick as someone who worked in healthcare for several years before coming here...it is such a sadistic doublespeak program.

Well I have no choice but to commute for now for personal reasons.

I love how you think you know the "type". I guess I am the "type" because I would rather spend time with my family than drag @$$ and miss my commute in an attempt to prove a point? You have to draw the line somewhere, and for me, I draw the line when it cuts into my family time. Period. I guess that makes me a spoiled member of the "me" generation? Let me get you a shovel...

So when there is nobody behind you, you taxi safely. But when there is someone back there you taxi how? Dangerously? Lets just be as safe as possible... then the ppl behind us will be just as safe as we are.

We all know what "safe" means. If we are at an outstation, we will simply let any other traffic go past us before calling for taxi. That burns more time anyway. I am all about slow downs when in negotiations, but I don't want to impose that on others if I can help it. Just common courtesy really.
