You can find a decent hotel for under USD$100. There are also several pretty decent hostels available for $15-50/night.

Australia was the best trip I've taken a month bumming around Sydney was the greatest trip I've had. The girlfriend and I are in talks about going to Rome at the end of may or june.

There are tons of hostels in Costa Rica, and pretty much everywhere else around the world. A private room in a hostel in CR will run you around $20 per night. So, waaaaaay cheaper than a hotel. I stay in hostels all the time, I don't even consider hotels anymore. Much more character, friendlier people, and usually a lot more ammenities. (At the last hostel I stayed in, the owner cooked me a huge (and I mean HUGE) breakfast every morning. She also woke up at 5am on my last day to make sure that the airport shuttle arrived on time and that I made it on it ok. What hotel will do that?)

As for rental cars, you can get one, but the bus is so cheap, I would just take that. It's more fun anyway. Liberia is closer to the Pacific beach resorts, San Jose to almost everything else. Get the Lonely Planet Costa Rica, it'll tell you everything you need to know.

I was able to do a fair bit of traveling when I was a regional FO. On my first vacation days, I decided that I would do an around the world trip. I started from PHL then went to London, Thailand, Australia, New Zealand, Tahiti, LAX and back home. All in all I was gone about 10 days and spent under $800 total.

After that was Costa Rica 12 times, Honduras, Colombia, Peru about 8 times, Brazil, Argentina, France, Germany, UK, Spain, Canary Islands, Lithuania, Romania, Austria, and Thailand.

I would highly recommend Eastern Europe if you are looking for a good place to go. The people are much more friendly than Western Europeans and the prices are much cheaper too. Fly into Bucharest on Lufthansa then take the train up to Brasov and go visit Dracula's castle would be a good start.

A second recommendation would be to go to Peru. Macchu Picchu and the Nasca plains are just incredible.

I went to Cancun over some time off. I stayed at the Hotetur right on the beach. It was an all-inclusive package (Booze, food, white sandy beaches) that my friend and me bid for on Perx. I think we got it for $125/night. We stayed there for 3 nights/4 days. I later priced it out on Yahoo and it was going for almost $400/night. Not a bad deal at all for us.

Everything you would want to do downtown was only a bus ride away. I think it was about 2 bucks for a ride downtown. We had everything down there: Carlos'n'Charlies, Margarittaville, Congo Bongo, Senior Frogs, and a bunch more that I can't remember. If you are into golfing (which most of us are here, I can only assume) they have some pretty phenomenal golf linx.

After busting my butt flying around the North East all winter long, it was worth spending the money for a little R&R. I earned it!
