Default How many years at a regional before going to a major?

Just as a ballpark estimate, how many years do you need to be, say, at American Eagle, before you can go to a Major such as Southwest?

Sorry if this is in the wrong forum, and thanks.

If you work at Eagle, you won't see a major airline unless they move the retirement age to 95.

So where could you work that you could go to a major like 5 years after you join a regional? I'm only 16, and I'm looking into the career, but I have seen some 25ish year old Southwest and Spirit pilots. So how did they do it? lol

Join the navy, I think you have a higher chance of becoming a fighter pilot there. Southwest will probably hire you then.

So would you recommend not going into the aviation field if I still have the choice? (I'm 16)

Also, my vision uncorrected is 20/30 and I'm not in tip top shape,so would I be qualified to be a fighter pilot? (I could lose like 10-15 pounds)

it all comes down to luck. Couple of street captains in the Dash at freedom went to CO, Jet blue, Airtran within 12 months. anyone hired in the last 2 years is looking at a few more at least before getting out to a major.

You need to be a captain at a regional 99% of the time to get a job at a major. So first research how long the upgrades to captain are at each regional. Then you have to guess who is going to hire between now and then and who isnt going to hire pilots. For example if a company doesnt hire pilots, upgrading slows, and upgrade time gets longer. There are so many more things involved... but basically you need alot of luck. And I bet there arent more than 10 people under the age of 28 at Southwest. It takes time. Though a few get lucky.

I would advise looking into the Armed Forces. Either active duty or the Guard. If I could go back I would join the Guard or Coast Guard.

And I'm betting those guys know someone very high in the company or the pilot group. If you're 16, you've still got time by the time you're even eligible to throw your stuff into the game, the industry might, actually will look completely different than it does now. When you get older and you find you're still interested then go for it.
