Don't forget that their standard of living is much lower and very few people can afford to travel. So even though their population is several times the population of the US their airspace is not congested comparatively speaking. It won't be that congested for years to come.

With that said, I see two big problems with this. First off, China cannot train pilots fast enough. Period. They just can't. Go check out some of the big flight schools in Florida, and count the number of Chinese pilots. With this said, it doesn't make much sense to me to be flying 50 seat RJ's when they can fly 150 seat 737's with the same number of pilots.

I would really love to see a US company benefit from the air travel boom in China the same way Boeing is. It would help lower our trade defecit. It will be interesting to see how this plays out.

China may have a much larger population, but it has a considerably smaller group of people that can afford air travel.
Their GDP per capita in china is only $6,300, with an unemployment rate at about 20%. Only a small % of the chines people could afford air travel. The RJ's are more than enough to start with.

Default THis is a little unrelated

I heard somebody say today that Mesa pays people for the hours they are scheduled to work rather than what they do work - so if your scheduled for 6 and work 8 you get paid for 6. Is this true? and if so is it different from other regional airlines? Also about how many days off are senior captains at Mesa getting per month? Any body out there have some first hand knowledge on this one?

That would be really fitting , China undercuts everyone else and make second quality items. This is what Mesa does to the airline industry!!!

Looking around the tarmac at PVG (Shanghai) you will see 90% widebody aircraft with a few 737's and MD-80s around. Going straight to RJs doesn't make a lot of sense.
