Default Delta owned CR9s yet to be assigned/delivered? - Jan'09

Trying to get an idea of how much longer the Delta CRJ900 game is going to drag out and couldn't find a concrete answer on the forum.

According to Bombardier (see link) Delta Connection has 44 firm orders and Northwest 36. Clearly the 36 delivered to Northwest are at Mesaba, but I believe I'm missing a couple pieces on the Delta side. http://bombardier.com/files/en/supporting_docs/20081127_CRJ_Series_Program_Status_EN.pdf

Delta owned CRJ900's:
13 COMAIR
10 ASA (formerly at Freedom, of which 7 are temporarily operated by Pinnacle)
5 MESABA (formerly at Freedom)
28 Subtotal (unaware of Skywest operating Delta owned CR9s? And Pinnacle owns their 16.)
44 Ordered per Bombardier website
16 CR9s yet to be assigned/delivered?

Is this correct?

8 of the ASA 900s will be from the factory if the 10 arrive as 'scheduled'...

Okay, I slipped up... of the 7 temporarily operated by Pinnacle, 2 are going to ASA and 5 are going to Mesaba.

So how many does this really leave in the proverbial showroom waiting for assignment?

The thing everyone keeps forgetting is the "new" delta scope clause. As it stands now there are too many 76 seaters in the system. Unless delta takes delivery of new A/C no more 76 seaters can be distributed to any DCI carriers.

When the CEO told us that Delta had taken back the 10, he mentioned that we were still in contention for 35 unallocated CRJ900's.

Now I am not trying to start a pea contest but that is what was said.

According to Comairs contract, we are guaranteed 30% of any new unawarded aircraft assigned. The way we are shrinking I don't think Delta will take delivery of new aircraft in the near future or we wouldnt be furloughing so much. (Deltas justification for our shrinkage recently is the planes being shuffled around now are old awards. They are just being re-allocated.)

Answered my own question by reading Delta's 3rdQtr 10-Q in more detail. Investor Relations - SEC Filings

Excerpt from Note 6: "During 2007, we entered into agreements with Bombardier, Inc. ("Bombardier") to purchase 44 CRJ-900 aircraft for delivery between August 2007 and February 2010... Our agreements with Bombardier permit us to assign to other carriers our CRJ-900 aircraft orders and related support provisions. In April 2007, we assigned to Pinnacle Airlines, Inc. ("Pinnacle") our orders to purchase 16 CRJ-900 aircraft (the "CRJ-900 Assigned Aircraft"). The remaining 28 CRJ-900 aircraft are scheduled for delivery through May 2009. As of September 30, 2008 we had accepted delivery of 20 of these 28 CRJ-900 aircraft, seven of which are being leased to a contract carrier."

The 16 CR9's I wasn't sure about, were in-fact "assigned" to Pinnacle. My guess, Pinnacle had no other way of getting onto Bombardiers waiting list and/or they took Delta's bait thinking they would eventually get more flying form Daddy.
