There was no wheels up time. Major T'storm over JFnK it was at your own risk and at a mad dash pace to get airframes up when the wx would permit. At 1 point i know i was at least #113 in line. They were launching 22 and every taxi way and runway around the horseshoe was nose to tail

You are correct... Totally wrong to leave the people on the a/c for a long EDCT.
You're a f/o on a CRJ making at tops $40/hr... A professional pilot should not need to rely on over block on delays to make his house payments. Even if you over block 5 hours a month that that's only $200 before tax (if u r making $40/hr which you probly are not). If you have to count on delays to pay your bills something is not right… Get some really pay rates and duty/trip rigs and stop making the pax pay the price for your horrible pay rates!!

Couple months ago I rode AWAC from IND-BOS. Gate agent announced that the wheels up time wasn't for another 3 hours, so I just figured that we'd hang around the terminal and eventually board. But no, CA actually requested for the agent to board the plane. CA explained we'd go out to the end of 23L, shut 'em down, and sit there hoping that someone would miss their slot and we'd be able to pick it up by being ready to go. Sounded like kind of a gamble to me, but low and behold after about 1.5 hrs, we had the engines running and were out of there. Question is, who's decision is this? Obviously the extra effort by the AWAC crew was highly appreciated (saved +1.5 hrs) but was that solely CA's decision? Anyone out there ever done anything like this?

Most generally the decision rests with the crew and what they think ATC is going to allow. AWACers are very familiar with these situations being they used to fly out of ORD. If you were ready to go you could usually get out earlier....if you weren't you would continue to wait. I don't know much about BOS but my experience with PHL and LGA show that if there is a ground stop due to WX you can count on the delay going the full monty...If there is a ground stop due to flow...that's subject to change and EDCTs are usually set in stone unless its a nice day.

At AWAC, its up to the captain, remember PIC authority. I know I always check and get the EDCT first and the weather at the destination. If it feels like, I.E. the weather isn't that bad, or its improving, it's best to load up and go wait. Normally it pays off, but again this comes from working the Northeast, and having worked out of ORD so you can get a "feel" of what's going on pretty good.
