Default Great Lakes

Anyone have some experience with Great Lakes? I know they pay horrible, but their minimums are so low. Is it better to just keep instructing and wait for Express Jet or some better regional?

All I know is that you'd get even "broker" going there...have you actually done the math on their pay? You literally make more at McDonald's ...If you convert their pay to spread over a typical 40 hr work week, I think it comes to something like $6.50/hr...is that even minimum wage anymore? Think QOL.

I have a buddy flying for them. Yes, QOL isn't all that hot, but the upgrade is about a year to a year and a half. You are flying to 'podunk' airports in mountainous terrain - good experience. Some of his friends that he flew with, went on to Frontier after being a CA for about a year to a year and a half.

So yes, I agree with Mustang on the QOL part, but if you 'buddy' up with a few guys/gals from class (as my friend did), its not so bad. You make about 1200-1500/month he said.

Plus he told me that the company gets a HUGE discount on Season Passes to 4 major resorts in the area. (Not to get side-tracked or anything...) Don't quote me...but Brekenridge, Keystone, Telluride and A-Bason ring a bell. Not 100% on that...but nontheless, you get to ski/snowboard out West when you have a hard day off. They are all with in about an hours driving range.

Now...don't choose a job because of a benefit such as that...you would be an idiot (which I'm sure you aren't) - hehehe...

Just a quick pointer - If you are trying to get hired at GLA, it is pertinent that you have an inside reference. It's not required, but it helps - A LOT!

Anyway, its 2am...and if any of you are wondering what the heck I just wrote...that's my excuse...

I flew at lakes for 6 years. Ok job, lots of time, quick upgrade. Bad pay (new contract might be coming soon), training contract (16 month $7500 i think). The best thing about lakes was the quick upgrade. I was there over sept 11th. otherwise I would have had a new job much sooner.

My advice, If you can get the job, do it. If its not for you go somewhere else after you get 1000 PIC. It wont take long.

Any airline I.D will get you a discount at the major ski resorts. Sometimes as much as 1/2 off. Also try it for hotels, car rentals, resorts etc.... never hurts to ask

Best of luck

Scenic Airlines is giving up all of there 1900's flying. Scenic said Great Lakes has an interest in the flying. Scenic will also return the two 1900's they have on lease. Scenic let the DOT know, and told them to find a replacment airline.
