Quick APC History lesson
From the APC forum inception in 2005, we were committed to offering a FREE venue for pilots. The two founders paid out-of-pocket for the platform for several years and avoided any type of advertising. Running ads on the forum was a tough decision, although with the explosive growth of APC in 2005-2006 it became apparent that we couldn't keep up with bandwidth costs by writing personal checks. In 2007 the forum achieved corporate sponsorship when APC was acquired by Internet Brands. The resources that IB brought were far beyond what John and I could provide on our own to the community, and frankly, the relationship has made APC a much much better online forum. One change implemented in 2007 was the placement of ads on the forum. This allowed a return for IB while allowing the forum to remain a free resource to pilots. Occasionally we'll see an ad that doesn't seem to fit the content, however IB is extremely responsive to this community when an inappropriate ad is displayed on the forum. In short, advertising allows this forum to remain a free resource. Our realationship with Internet Brands is fantastic - they get an ROI and we maintain creative input and operation of the forum. This forum is financially backed by Internet Brands, but is still run for pilots - by pilots. It's a win win. |

Not saying it's right or wrong... just pointing out what I see as logic 101 fail.

Here there is no revenue generated unless you click... Riddle me this... if I block all the bright, flashy, resource-hogging, bandwidth-grabbing ads, am I not saving the website money by saving the bandwidth? Taking BW, even if it just a small part that you were able to reduce by a nominal amount, is still taking BW. |
I would say block ads on random sites you don't really care about. But if there is a website that you rely on for news and or just ridiculous rumors for comic relief then leave the adblock off.

OR The revenue is generated only if we click on an ad? Just trying to get a clear idea on the subject from your end. |
Well the ads are loaded to the computer, no matter if the adblock removes them from your sight or not. (At least in adblock plus' instance I'm pretty sure).
Adblock removes the links and pictures from your sight, but they are still loaded with the website, so the "we lose money" argument is only valid if the user was an avid ad-clicker before he got the blocker. Now I've never actually hit a banner ad in my entire life, that I can remember, so even if they were there, I would've ignored them. The only thing adblock does for me, is remove annoying advertisement that I would not have clicked even if I saw them |
